A Tale of 2 Disciplinary Approaches
What are the similarities and differences between AD/PCD?
Similarities
Both models require rules be set and clear consequences be laid out. Both models include a reward system to reinforce positive behavior. Both models require teachers to remain calm and be consistent and fair.
Differences
While Assertive Discipline focuses more on developing, implementing and utilizing a clear, hierarchy of consequences for misbehavior and consistency in issuing positive and/or negative reinforcements, Positive Classroom Discipline focuses more on student responsibility and encouraging it through positive reinforcement, using a backup system of negative sanctions as a last resort.
