Message From the Principal
Dear Wheeler Families,
What are the chances we continue to go "snow-day-less"? I think we are in for some inclement weather this week but we will see! I will continue to keep you posted on whether to send children in with snow gear or not.
On a different note, earlier in the month of January, I made my rounds to each K-5 classroom to review what it means to be a "Leader of the PACK" and how to respond to a child who may do something inappropriate.
These were the highlights of the message to students in each classroom:
- In order to respect other people and our school, you have to respect yourself
- In order to respect yourself, you have to love yourself, be proud of what you DO, and be proud of you.
- When a student says or does something mean to you, it is likely they are upset with themselves and not proud of themselves. Therefore, because they feel so badly about themselves or frustrated with a situation, they lash out.
- When this happens, you have two choices in the moment: "Grow up" or "Grow Down". I explain what this means in depth and the examples of the different good choices associated with "growing up" and the poor choices with "growing down".
Rather than explain in detail the 4th bullet above, I would encourage you to ask your child what that means (to grow up or down with appropriate and inappropriate examples of how to respond to someone picking on you. If they can not tell you, please email me to let me know.
These were good, intimate discussions with students and as a school, we will continue to emphasize the importance of respect, being leaders of the PACK, and being good self-advocates.
Thank you,
Mr. B.
