3. Idea for BC- Speed Geeking (idea that was successfully implemented by Candace M. at Springman)
4. Playdates: How do you want these structured and when do we want these to begin?
Meeting Notes - 2/4/2014
1. Start discussing the observation process and schedule?
2. Mini-tutorial on Schoology and work flow? Dave and Danae gave a presented Schoology and some of the ways they are using it with students currently. The extent as to how Schoology is used by teachers to delivery content and manage student information varies but everyone is using it and it is quickly becoming the hub for most student/teacher workflow in most 7th grade and A block classrooms.
3. I would like to talk about app evaluation and how they are chosen for the student iPads. What we are hoping for next year in regards to Student Apple IDs. Helene went over the app evaluation document and explained how Candace and Helene determined which apps were to be added to the student iPads. We evaluated based on: the TPACK and SAMR frameworks, Technical aspects- advertisements, limited use due to LITE version, age appropriateness
4. Next Meeting Date
iPad App Request- Middle School
Middle School App Request Form
Note Link Below:
•Free Apps that are submitted will be reviewed and installed at our next syncing point. Keep in mind, we are trying to be consistent and all requests cannot be met.
•Always check age rating. Is it 4+, 12+, 17+
This is important. Terms of service is important and we need to always check this prior to recommending an app.
App Evaluation Form: This is an evaluation checklist that walks you through looking a apps using the TPACK and SAMR Instructional Models.
Remember: Less is More! It is not quantity of apps, it is quality of the apps and how they can best be used to help our students demonstrate learning.
Meeting Notes from 1/14/2014
Meeting Notes 1/14/2014
Helene added to this bank of information: The App Evaluation link to help teachers understand what Candace and I use as one of our tools for determining apps that we put on student iPads. We also use SAMR as guide when making selections.
Helene is compiling a list of student installed apps and how they can help with Executive Functioning skills- She has begun this on the resource page, it will continue to develop through the year.
To Do: Helene to continue to work on the list of apps and how they can be used for Executive Functioning.
Helene to work on an iTunes U class on Differentiation and Adaptive Tech using the iPads (probably summer project)
Observations: We have 6 1/2 days available for 4 to 5 teachers each for observation. Helene, 7th grade teams and the A blocks that work with students with iPads will work with the 6th and 8th grade teachers to provide Learning Labs. These will be opportunities for the next year 1:1 teachers to observe teachers and students using iPads in the classroom learning environment.
Teachers can also take their planning and job alike times to schedule individual observation times. Helene would be glad to cover classes to help make this happen.
Currently, Galaxy LA is working in the 3A Commons - students are creating children's books on the iPads using various apps. Teachers can take the opportunity to drop into the 3A Commons this week to observe student engagement and teacher facilitation.
Dave will be going into team meeting to talk about Schoology on 1/22 1:30-2:00
Helene will cover Dave's class during this time.
Marek, Jeremy, Megan and Katrina all joined at least one 7th grade Schoology course so they can gain a better idea of how it is being used with the students.
To Do: Helene to compile dates from 7th grade teachers and A block teachers to setup Learning Labs.
--Helene to check with Kathy on dates that conflict with school events
Dates that have school conflicts:
6th: 2/12 (ss trip)
8th: 2/24 and 2/26
Classroom Management ideas: (Note Documents Below this post)
2 documents that provide redirection for students:
Distributed a document that outlines
1. "What do I do now" document created by Candace-creative ideas on what they can do with their iPad once they finish their work. Continues focus and can be content driven
2. List of modules and descriptions in Schoology that students can be assigned for the uTurn Technology Course.
Agreed Process for PD at Attea
1. Reps from this committee will work with their 6th grade teams to encourage their exploration of the iSucceed online learning module and help them setup their Schoology account. Helene will explore ways to hook them into using Schoology by embedding professional development that includes Schoology as a tool.
------Dave and Danae offered to drop into Team meetings, job alike meetings etc. to provide guidence in using Schoology.
To Do: Danae to add Schoology Class Codes from various 7th grade teachers to the blog so 6th and 8th grade teachers can join the class to view how the LMS is being used with students.
2. (Learning Labs) 6th grade and 8th grade teachers push into 7th grade and A Block Classrooms to observe, question and reflect.
3. Continued Embedded PD.. for example: Building Council
3. Helene to provide times before and after school for "Playdates". Times where teachers can come to the LRC with Helene as guide to encourage a time of exploration and sharing using the iPads.

How to Add a Course to iTunes University app
Looking for training on how to use the iPad apps?
Check out this comprehensive course created by your very own tech facilitators.
Over the summer, Helene and Candace (Springman) worked to create an iTunes University course focused on how to use the iPads as a teaching tool in our classrooms. This iTunes University course covers the following information:
- Using an iPad 101
- Video and document tutorials on how to use many of the core apps
- A troubleshooting guide
- Instructional information on using iPads with students
How to gain Download an iTunes University Course:

Do the same for the iTunes University Work Flow Course:
Enroll Code: EPK-KJ6-5ZC
Once you have added the iPad Teacher Reference Guide to your iTunes U library, you can do the same process for the Middle School Work Flow course. This course contains info on what is Schoology, how teachers use Schoology and how students use Schoology.
Tech Support: Student Help Desk
We are beginning a pilot with the 7th grade Tech Team using their tech training to help their peers, teachers and substitutes in supporting the 1:1. Students can fill out this online help desk, I will assign the Tech Team students the ticket for follow-up during x-block time.
This is a preview of what the help desk system will look like. THis does not replace the teacher help desk but it does allow students to have an area where they can get support as needed throughout the day and while at home.
