Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, & Publisher
Students in this class will study all aspects of the 2010 Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Publisher and have the opportunity to receive Microsoft Certification and possibly even articulated college credit. This course will be great for all students as you will use the skills you learn in every class you take in high school from research papers in English to presentations in Foods. The certification goes with you and can be used to help obtain jobs after you graduate!
Microsoft Excel & Access
After completing Microsoft Word, students can take Microsoft Excel & Access their second semester. This course will continue your study of the Microsoft suite and also leads to more certification and articulated college credit! This course is ideal for students that are interested in a career in business, accounting, or financial management. Microsoft Excel is a part of our Microsoft IT Academy and a special acknowledgement at graduation.
Principles of Business
Principles of Business starts students out with the basics of anything and everything in the business and management world. From personal finance such as credit and checking to policies that businesses must follow students will learn more about the business world.
Visual Arts Beginning
Activities in the class are mostly hands on with students learning basic drawing techniques using different mediums. Students will learn how to draw faces and human bodies, paint with both acrylic and watercolor, and practice drawing from different perspectives. Projects include designing masks, creating murals, and designing t-shirts.
Marching Band
Marching band is a unique experience for students to combine their love of music, performance, and school spirit. The marching band performs at a variety of functions including football games, band competitions, pep rallies, and concerts. This is a first semester class and students will learn and practice their show during the summer months.
Theatre Arts Beginning
Students in Beginning Theatre will be introduced to the history of theatre and the technical stage terms that are commonly used within the world of theatre. Students begin the semester by learning stage directions, story telling skills, and pantomiming. By the end of the semester, students will perform a one person monologue during an evening performance to demonstrate the skills they have obtained over the semester. Students in this class will develop public speaking and team building skills.
Symphonic Band
This is a second semester band class that focuses on concert performances. This course can be taken with Marching Band to keep Band all year or in lieu of Marching Band if a student prefers concerts over marching. Students will perform in concerts and competitions, receiving feedback from judges and other band directors from the area. Students who participate in Symphonic Band will have additional opportunities to audition for All County Band and All District Band.
Chorus
This class will place emphasis on basic vocal techniques such as posture, breathing, and diction. If you love to sing and perform in front of other people, then this may be the elective for you!
Health Team Relations
This class is the introductory course in the Health Sciences cluster for students who have thoughts of choosing a career in medicine. Students will be exposed to various facets of the healthcare arena including a thorough review of the history of healthcare, a basic understanding of medical math, cultural diversity, and ethical principles of healthcare. Additionally students will complete a unique approach to learning over 350 medical roots allowing them to comprehend over 10,000 medical terms - proving invaluable to if they pursue a medical career.
Agriscience
Agriscience introduces students to the variety of branches in the agricultural field. Students will study the basics of animal science, engineering (tools and shop), hunter safety, plant science, and environmental science. Anyone interested in FFA is encouraged to take this course, as the FFA creed and procedures are taught in depth. All students are required to complete a SAE project outside of class, applying philosophies and techniques that have been learned in class.
Teen Living
This course use to be called "home economics" and is a beginner level class that will cover just the surface of fashion design and marketing, foods and nutrition, parenting and child development, housing and interiors, self reflection, goals, and study skills. This course is to help students begin to become more independent and acquire the skills needed for surviving adulthood. This class consists of lecture and labs for cooking and sewing.
Foods 1
After completing Teen Living, Foods 1 can be taken 2nd semester and is a study of foods and nutrition. We begin class with safety and sanitation, move on to cooking terms and equipment, acquire skills for table manners and etiquette, learn about vitamins and minerals, study the government dietary guidelines of MyPlate, and end with learning about food from other countries. This class consists of 75% classroom learning and 25% labs for cooking. This is a great course for students who would like to delve into the culinary world and to find a passion for health and well-being.
PLTW Intro to Engineering
IED exposes students to the design process, proper teamwork, technical communication methods, engineering standards and engineering documentation. Students use Inventor 3D modeling software, a 3D printer, and a 3D scanner to help them design solutions to solve problems. Students will learn how to take a solution from conception, to hand sketching, to computerized models, to physical models, to testing and evaluation, all while documenting their work and communicating to their peers and members of the professional community. This course is one of only two, 6.0 weighted courses available to 9th grade students.
PLTW Principles of Engineering
POE exposes students to some of the major concepts in engineering – machines, energy & power, thermodynamics, electricity, statics, material properties, destructive testing, controls, fluid power, programming, and kinematics. Students employ engineering and scientific concepts to solve engineering problems related to these topics while using previous knowledge from IED. Solutions are explored using VEX robotics, and other high tech state of the art equipment. Students continue to practice documenting their work and communicating to their peers and members of the professional community. This course is one of only two, 6.0 weighted courses available to 9th grade students.
Yearbook
Yearbook is a great opportunity to be a part of the largest publication of high school. You learn how to design and layout pages, take pictures, and advertise for sales. As a yearbook staff member, you will be required to work over the summer at yearbook camp and selling ads to local businesses. An application is required for this course.
