DURING Reading Strategies
Remember this is NOT an exhaustive list!
Here are the during reading strategies we reviewed as part of this module.
As part of this module, we have already reviewed Chunking the Text and a handful of Active Reading Strategies in order to:
- Make text more accessible (chunking into smaller sections to process)
- Visualize and illustrate a section of the text (Google Drawing of Robo-bee)
- Compare and Contrast information within and across the text (Venn Diagram)
- Make connections to prior knowledge (Venn Diagram)
- Reflect on Reading (1st chunk, adding to KWL 2.0)
- Ask questions (4th chunk, adding to KWL 2.0)
- Engage with the text (practicing active thinking throughout)
Now, let's look through a few more DURING reading strategies!
DURING Reading Strategies provide ways to engage with text and use active reading strategies:
Explore some of the ideas below:
- Use text codes(symbols) to help monitor comprehension (when they don't understand, have a question, etc)
- Use a strategy like Highlight Plus (from TRTW: Reading Strategies)
- Teach students to Notice & Note (annotate) important signposts in nonfiction texts (Contrast & Contradiction, Word Gaps, Quoted Words, Numbers & Stats, Extreme Language)
- Offer an organizer for note-taking like Cornell Notes, Venn Diagram, visual mapping, text structures like cause & effect, etc. This sitealso has a bunch of great ideas!
- Assign reading partners/study buddies (especially for ELLs)
- Have fix-up strategies at each table or on wall for reference. Try these for secondary: Fix Up Strategies or these for Elementary: Reading Strategies!
