Principal's Message

Dear North Gresham Families,

As things progress with the pandemic, we continue to receive updated guidance regarding masks and other health protocols. On November 23, 2021, Governor Brown and representatives from the Oregon Health Authority announced a change to current mask guidance. The changes are as follows:

  • Masks outdoors at GBSD schools and programs are now optional.
  • This change applies to recess, outdoor instruction, and outdoor PE.
  • Please have a conversation with your student if you would like them to keep their masks on during these times.
  • Students have been instructed to wear masks until they are outside and then to place their masks in their pocket, pulled under their chin, or pushed up on their arm.
  • During line-up, students are reminded to put their masks back on before entering the building.
  • Parents are asked to continue to wear masks as often as possible when around students, including parents who walk up to pick up their child at the end of the day.

  • Masks remain mandatory indoors.

I'm also excited to share that we are now welcoming volunteers back into the building! Please see the information in this newsletter for requirements and steps to sign-up to volunteer. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out.

    Sincerely,

    Shawnda Sewell

    Principal

Exciting News - Welcome Back Volunteers!

Effective December 6, 2021, GBSD is able to welcome back volunteers into our schools! In order to be able to volunteer, volunteers will need:

    1. Proof of being fully vaccinated against COVID-19
    2. A completed and approved volunteer application

Since it's been two years since we've been able to have volunteers in our building, all past volunteers will need to reapply. New volunteers will also need to complete an application. To apply to volunteer, go to: https://www.gresham.k12.or.us/Page/62

Important: It takes about two weeks to process applications. If your application is not approved, you will receive a letter from the district. Approved applications do not receive notices. To check on the status of your application, please call or email the school: 503-661-6415, thomas82@gresham.k12.or.us.

Once approved, you can reach out to our PTC and/or your student's teacher for volunteer opportunities. You will need to bring proof of your vaccination status when you first come to volunteer and check-in with the office. After you've provided proof, going forward you will only need to sign-in at the office when coming to the school to volunteer.

Questions? Please contact Nina Thomas at the school number and email listed above.

What's Going On In 3rd Grade?

Our North Star 3rd graders are working with arrays to model multiplication. They did a scavenger hunt around the classroom looking for real life arrays. Students wrote an equation for each array they found and solved for the product.

In reading we are working on identifying the main idea of a text and using text evidence to support our main idea. In Ms. Coleman's class, students recently met a goal of passing 200 lessons on iReady, and they did it in just 3 weeks! To celebrate, students brought a stuffed animal to school with them for a day.

We are very proud of all of the hard work and progress our 3rd graders are making!

    Sincerely,

Ms. Coleman, Ms. Conan, and Mrs. Grieve

Inclement Weather & Emergency School Closure Information

In the event of a school closure due to inclement weather, please make sure you are signed up for our district's SchoolMessenger system. You can opt-in by texting "Y" or "YES" to 67587. You will receive messages to your phone. You can also download the app by visiting the website here: https://go.schoolmessenger.com/#/home.

If school closes early while students are already here, we will send a message to families to notify you of the early school closure. Please note that we send students home as you directed on the blue emergency transportation form you filled out in the beginning of the year. We do not have the ability to call all families and ask how students will get home in the event of an early closure, or to receive a high call volume for last-minute changes. In order to get students home safely and quickly, we rely on advance planning and the information from the emergency transportation form. If you didn't fill out a blue emergency transportation form at the beginning of the year, or need to make a change to your form, please contact the office as soon as possible.

Our North Stars worked hard, and we will post our second virtual award assembly on December 15th. Teachers will award students who exemplified Happy Habit #2. You can watch the virtual assembly by going to our website or our Facebook page.

Also, our students are working hard to earn a spirit week by earning Star Bucks and filling our school Star Buck bucket. They are so close! If they earn it, we will announce spirit week via Remind and Facebook.
