Smore Journal

I believe that the central theme in Of Mice and Men is friendship and loneliness. Most of the main characters in this book admit to being lonely and look for companionship in strangers. In the very beginning of the story George tells Lennie that they’re not like other guys who move from one ranch to the next because they have each other. In a way George depends on Lennie just as much as Lennie depends on him, George needs a companion and Lennie will never willingly leave him. In the end George has to kill Lennie and he becomes just like the other guys without companionship. Curly is another great example of how friendship and loneliness play a major role in Of Mice and Men
