Message to families
Mariner Family,
Thank you for your positive daily impact on our school, on our educational program, on each other, on our community and on our world. As we keep reading the focus of our weekly bulletin, I will share with you 10 tips to maintain the reading focus at home, with your family:
Encourage your child to read. Reading helps your child’s wellbeing, develops imagination and has educational benefits. Just a few minutes per day can have a big impact on children of all ages.
Read aloud regularly. Try to read to your child every day.
Encourage reading choice. Give your child opportunities to read different types of books. Fiction, non-fiction, poetry, comics, recipes, etc…
Read together. Establish a regular reading time together as a family. Read the same book together or read different books. Read to each other aloud and read silently.
Establish a reading goal. Make a daily goal to read at least 30 minutes per day and keep a list of the books that you read. Make a goal to read 50 books in a year, or 100 books in a year. You decide how many books you want to read in a year and when you achieve that goal, increase the goal the following year.
Encourage each other to write a fun story about your family and then read it aloud to the family. Maybe it is a fun experience that happened. It can be about a birthday party in your family, or a summer day or any fun family memory that you recall.
Encourage each other to write a song. Write songs about each other, about how much joy you bring to each other’s lives. Write the song, read the song, sing the song.
Have fun with the family reading time and don’t try to be perfect with family reading time at home. Making mistakes is part of the learning process and you can teach your child to not get so frustrated when making a mistake. When making a reading mistake, encourage your child to smile, correct the mistake and keep reading.
Don’t Stop Believing. Remember that reading is writing and they go hand in hand. Reading also involves listening and speaking and thinking. Reading is the foundation of learning and will be a major factor in the opportunities that you want your child to have in life. I encourage you to establish regular reading activities into your daily family routine, knowing and believing that you are setting your child up for success in life.
Stay the course. Keep reading. Persevere. Never give up.
