A word from Mr Broom

After positive discussions with both our STARMAT and NYCC colleagues we're delighted to let you know that our Early Years will be expanding in September. We're moving from a 30 place Reception class to two 30 place Reception classes and therefore we're on the look out for a new fantastic teacher to join our talented team. If you know anyone who may be interested, please let them know. Here is the information.

Plans are also going well for the school building expansion. We've had six companies visit site to gather information for the final tender process and, all being well, the works should start at the beginning of summer. We've also published next year's holiday dates which are available for you to look at here.

Finally, I completed my round of teaching visits looking at behaviour for learning this week. This is the way in which our children engage with their tasks and challenges. I have to say they were all brilliant and I'd like to say thank you to the teaching staff for providing such exciting exercises to really engage our young learners.

Have a lovely week ahead.

Important SATs Meeting for Y6

Miss Sowden will be hosting an important meeting re Year 6 SATs on Tuesday 3rd March at 6pm in the school hall.

All Y6 children and parents are invited to attend this important meeting which should last about 40 minutes.

Website Upgrade Completed

Our school website has had a makeover and is publicly available at www.sherburnhungate.net. Over the coming months Miss Mackay and the team of staff will be spending a great deal of time working on the curriculum and will be updating that part of the website as they go along.

Uniform Reminder

Since Christmas we seem to have a small number of children who are attending school with nail varnish applied. This isn't part of our high expectations on uniform and we ask that if your child has nail varnish applied, it is removed before school on Monday morning.

Additionally, the school uniform policy on footwear is black shoes. We have a small number of children who attend in trainers, boots etc. Please ensure your child wears black shoes to school.

Thank you, as always, for your support in this matter.

Punctuality Issues

We've noticed an increase in the number of children who are arriving at school late. This must stop. Being late for school seriously affects the child's day as they constantly feel as though they are catching up.

Teachers collect children from their lines at 0840 and doors close for registration at 0845.

Please ensure your child arrives at school to line up with their friends, ready for their day.

Illness Reminder

A quick reminder that if your child has sickness or diarrhoea, we ask that they stay away from school for 48 hours from the last bout of illness. Thank you for your support with this.

Attendance Well above National

With an average of 97.5%, our attendance this week is back above the national average.

Well done to those children with great attendance and congratulations to Year 4 who are our attendance champions this week with 99.6%

I also too a look at our attendance for this year from September and I'm delighted to report that it currently stands at 96.5% which is 0.5% above the national average. Well done everyone!

Medicine Policy Reminder

A reminder that our policy on Medicines (click here) clearly states that children must not keep medicine in their possession in school, or self-administer it. If your child requires medication, please speak to our admin team.

Mobile Phone Use by Pupils - TIK TOK WARNING

A reminder that pupils who bring phones to school (for travel to and from school) should not use them on the school premises. Thank you.

We are also aware that children in school are using an App called TikTok to communicate with each other and the wider world. I've included a parent information sheet regarding the dangers of this app, intended for use by those over 12. To access the App, your child has to have fabricated their age (to appear over 12) or has been granted permission by an adult.

Buddies Half Term Availability

For those of you requiring child care during the half term holiday, Kelly has spaces available at Buddies. Please contact her at buddieshungate@gmail.com or 07930481772.

Spring Term Learning Journeys

At Sherburn Hungate Primary School, we plan our learning through what is known as a Learning Journey. This typically starts with a 'big bang' event (something to spark imagination and enthusiasm for the topics covered) and ends with a 'showcase' (a celebration of the children's work to an audience).
