Preschool Update

Van Meter PreK Inc. has operated since 1979. This private preschool has used Van Meter CSD facilities for several years but has operated as its own entity. Over the last few years, raising funds to operate as an independent preschool has become more challenging. Van Meter PreK Inc. inquired about the school district starting its own program as state funding for public preschool has increased four to five years ago, but the district didn't feel the timing was right.

As enrollment has increased, student needs have changed and with ongoing conversations with local preschool programs, the Van Meter CSD has recently determined that starting its own preschool program was best for the Van Meter CSD community. The school board approved a plan at its December school board meeting to start a four-year-old preschool program for up to two classrooms with a morning and an afternoon session of classes that will serve a total of 80 kids or up to 20 in each section.

This board decision had input from a wide variety of people over the last several years, and the timing seems right to start a district-run program in the 2020-2021 school year. More information will come out in the next few weeks, but if you have any questions, contact Cody Tibbetts, or Deron Durflinger and they will be glad to help you out.

Kindergarten Enrollment

We will be sending out a Kindergarten enrollment form early next week. If you have a child who will be 5 years old by September 15, 2020 and you plan on enrolling them in Kindergarten or Transitional Kindergarten for the 2020-2021 school year, please be sure to complete the form. If you have any questions, contact Mr. Tibbetts or Kris in the elementary office.

Soccer Update

As most of you know, the Van Meter Schools Board of Directors voted to start a high school soccer program beginning in the spring of 2021. The plan is to get coaches hired this school year to help begin to put the program together. We plan on starting to advertise in late January or early February.

Knowing that we currently do not have the idea field set up for soccer, the program was approved with the likelihood that games would be played on the road for the first few seasons. Since long term facility plans have been developed, the board is now considering some options to build a new soccer field game and practice area for MS football and soccer on the East Athletic Complex. No decision has been made at this time, but the location of the fields would be east of the current high school practice football field. There would be no additional seating, parking, or restrooms added. The fields would allow us to host our own games and have a good location for practices and would help us develop our athletic programs.

Cost estimates are being collected, and a decision will be made later this winter.

Big picture

Open Enrollment Guidelines

Managing open enrollment has been a topic of discussion for the Van Meter School Board of Directors for the last several years. Open enrollment was closed for all grades except kindergarten for the 19-20 school year. The guidelines for the 19-20 school year are linked below. The board will likely make a decision on the 20-21 guidelines at its January School Board Meeting. With a variance in several grade levels in enrollment with the smallest grade level enrollment having 56 and the largest enrollment being 78, a decision needs to be made on if other grades should be opened or remained closed. Our current total enrollment for students in grades TK-12 is 895.

Let us know if you have any questions.

Facility Usage/Youth Sports

During the winter months, our facility usage requests increase dramatically. With JH and HS events happening sometimes five nights a week, it becomes difficult to find time for youth sports. This is one of the challenges of being in a K-12 facility. The city of Van Meter does not have a place for indoor sports to practice or play, so they are allowed to use the school facilities free of charge.

We have a board policy for facility usage. We are also working with our HS coaches to develop some guidelines for youth teams in regards to practice times and games. Please check out the facility usage guidelines linked and be sure to talk to our varsity coaches if you have questions about how much you should be practicing with youth teams and what skills they would like to see developed.

Happy Holidays!
