Cold and Flu Season is Upon Us!
Although the rate of illness at Carlisle has not spiked yet, we are hearing from other nearby campuses that the flu has arrived in Plano in a big way. Parents, we need your diligence in keeping sick children home from school. We all have a responsibility to prevent the spread of illness. Remember that students should stay home a full 24 hours after a fever, without the need for fever reducing medication, before returning to school. The same policy applies to students who have vomiting or diarrhea. There should be no vomiting or diarrhea for 24 hours and the student should be able to eat normally without a problem.
The common cold always presents a problem. There is often no fever. However, students whose symptoms are persistent or who cannot manage their symptoms (think Snot Monsters!) should stay at home.
Please remember that all medications are to be processed through the nurses office. The authorization form is available on the PISD website at: http://www.pisd.edu/parents/health/documents/MedAuthEngPro11-2015_002.pdf
We cannot stress enough the importance of effective HANDWASHING. Give me 5!
1. Water first. Always wet the hands thoroughly to begin.
2. Soap is next.
3. Scrubbing for 20 seconds. Don’t forget the back of the hands and in between fingers.
4. Rinse thoroughly.
5. Dry
EVEN COUGH DROPS ARE CONSIDERED TO BE MEDICATION!
Parents, cough drops and throat lozenges rarely contain any cough suppressing medication, however, PISD does require a medication authorization form. At school, students with a cough and / or sore throat are offered a salt water gargle, peppermint to suck on and frequent drinks of water. This is often just as effective or even more so than a cough drop.
Take a Taste Tuesday
This week we skipped the letter Q and moved on to the letter R. Mrs. Vivian’s kindergarten class got to taste raisins. We learned that raisins are just dried grapes and they come in colors just like grapes do. You can get the traditional brown raisins or golden raisins. Raisins, like all dried fruits are very high in natural fruit sugar so they are a great energy booster. Today we discussed serving size. It is not a good idea to keep eating raisins until your tummy is full. That is way too many raisins. A serving size is a small handful, about 1-2 Tablespoons. Raisins are great when they are eaten by themselves or in oatmeal, salads or cookies. Most of the children in Mrs. Vivian’s class had eaten raisins before and most of them said they would try them again. It is a healthy choice to try new foods. Let’s put raisins on the shopping list this week.
Friendly Reminders -
Food Allergy Alert – Friendship Parties
We make every effort to provide an allergy safe environment for all of our students. However, in the case of holiday parties we sometimes have foods available that might not be right for your child. Our teachers are aware of your child’s food allergies if you have shared that information with us. You can check that information through the Parent Portal system on your child’s emergency card. You can also call or e-mail Nurse Grace at 469-752-0609 or Judith.grace@pisd.edu. If your child has serious food allergies we recommend that you provide individual snacks for your child that can act as a replacement for items offered at the parties. You can send nonperishable items for your child’s teacher to have on hand in the classroom.
On time arrival at school is VERY important in order for students to start their day successfully! The school opens at 7:00 a.m. each morning with adult supervision. Starting at 7:30 a.m., students are allowed to go directly to their classroom. Arriving by 7:30 allows for the students to have a smooth start to their day, not feel rushed, get things unpacked, and not miss any instruction. The tardy bell rings at 7:45 a.m., and students who aren’t in the building at 7:45 a.m. are counted tardy. Three tardies equal an absence.
Student Absences: In order for a student to make up and receive credit for work assigned during an unexcused absence, the student must submit one week in advance a written notification of the planned absence to the principal. When no prior notification is given, students shall receive a zero for all work assigned during the absence.
Please remember to contact the Child Safe Line at 469-752-0600 option 3 to report your student’s absence. Also, please send a signed note upon your student’s return. If note is not received within 3 days, your child’s absence will be reported as unexcused. Please note that emails are not acceptable, the note must be handwritten or typed and signed by the parent.
