The Excellence in Youth (EY) Program at Westside Community Schools provides expanded learning opportunities for students with high ability, in addition to fostering and encouraging talent development in all students.

Academic Competition Season In Full Swing!

McMillan Math Contest

On Tuesday, November 9th, eight 6th graders competed in the 30th Annual McMillan Magnet Math Contest.


The Rockgate Lane team of Cooper K. and Ben B. (from Rockbrook), Smith D. (from Westgate), and Mohammad A K (from Prairie Lane) came in 3rd place overall for the 6th grade team division and came in 1st place for the Quizizz competition.


The Swanson Superstar team of Parthiv M., Oliver L., Megan K., and Max R. came in 1st place overall for the 6th grade team division and came in 2nd place for the Quizizz competition.


Congratulations to these mathletes who represented WCS at the competition.

Spelling Bee Finals

Congratulations to the school finalists of the spelling bee! School finals took place November 3rd-5th. The champion and runner up from each school will advance to the district spelling bee which will take place at Westside Middle School on Friday, December 17th.

Quiz Bowl

Eight Westside elementary students competed at the ESU 3 Quiz Bowl on Nov. 23. The team consisting Dakota S. from Westgate, Leia K. and Daniel L. from Paddock, and Henry H. from Sunset were tough competitors and made it through 5 close rounds before going out. The team of Will U. and Smith D. from Westgate, Gavin L. from Sunset, and Max R. from Swanson made it to the final four and ended up winning 3rd place overall.


Congratulations to all of these WCS Quiz Bowl competitors.

Every student in Westside has the opportunity to begin earning badges. Working towards earning a badge allows students to dig deep into topics and explore individual interest areas. Badges can be found in various subject and interest areas.


Earn 12 badges to achieve the acclaimed "Digital Dozen" and earn a prize and recognition! Choose from hundreds of badge options on the EY Website or choose one below to get kick started!

First Digital Dozen Winner for 21-22!

The Excellence In Youth Team is proud to announce Whitney L. from Rockbrook as the first recipient of the Digital Dozen award for this school year! This award is presented to students who earn 12 of the digital badges on the EY Website (ey.westside66.org), which is available to students district-wide. It takes self-motivation, grit, and determination to earn these badges and Whitney should be proud of this accomplishment!

SPARK YOUR LEARNING!

Mini Sparks are quick lessons that introduce learners to various topics. Sparks can be found under every subject area on the EY website. These activities require minimal supplies and make for a great family activity!

‘Buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo’ is a grammatically correct sentence. How? Emma Bryce explains how this and other one-word sentences illustrate some lexical ambiguities that can turn ordinary words and sentences into mazes that mess with our minds.

WMS Students Visit Durham Museum

WMS had the opportunity to visit Durham Museum on Tuesday, November 9th. Students enjoyed "Bill’s Flashback Fridays" which provide personal connections to history and help keep that history alive and listening to painting conservator Kenneth Bé about this 1905 Omaha painting.

Central High Math Contest

Six Westside Middle School students attended the Central High School 80th Annual Middle School Math Contest on Nov. 18. Congratulations to all the mathletes who represented WMS and came home with the following awards:


The entire WMS team consisting of BingYi W., Violet Y., Axel L., Caden M., Zahraa A., and Emily A. placed 2nd place overall.


Violet Y. came in 8th place overall for the 8th grade division and BingYi W. came in 1st as the top 8th grade performer.


The "Sample Text" team of Violet Y., BingYi W., and Caden M. came in 3rd place for the team competition.

EY WEBSITE - YOUR ONE STOP INFORMATION HUB!

The EY program website is the hub of communication for the EY Team. For our K-8 students, monthly challenges, seminars and events, as well as other learning opportunities are posted to the site on a regular basis.


All students are encouraged to participate in the opportunities posted, regardless of whether they have been identified for the EY Program. Students can participate independently by accessing the opportunities at home or during tech time at school. Teachers may also facilitate these whole and small-group enrichment opportunities for students in the classroom.
