It is hard to believe that we are only have 10 weeks of school left, and 24 days until our first STAAR exam. As we finish out this cycle over the next few weeks and move into cycle 6, I am encouraging everyone to stress the importance of our students doing well and finishing strong. As I've mentioned before, House Bill 4545 requires students who do not pass the STAAR test to take 30 hours of accelerated instruction the next school year for each STAAR test they fail. This means that your student could lose an elective and be placed in an intervention class instead. While we may not all agree with mandated testing, it is part of our educational system and we can only ask that students do their absolute best on the exam. I know our teachers and students have been working very hard this year and will be more than prepared.
I know that many of you may have heard the discussions centered around HISD's budget for the 2022-2023 school year and a new staffing model. While I have not completed our final 2022-2023 budget yet, I can tell you that we will have to shift to a traditional 7-period school day, similar to what we had a few years ago. This means that students will take Math, ELA/R, Science, Social Studies, Physical Education, and TWO electives. If your student is a magnet student, then one of their electives must be their magnet area. That means they will have one additional class period for another elective. I will be discussing this more once our final budget is presented and approved. We will also host parent-student information nights for the upcoming school year in the next few weeks. Elective course selection will take place for rising 7th and 8th graders in late April.
As always, if you need assistance, please do not hesitate to reach out to a member of Team Pershing.
I hope everyone has a great week!
Steven

Need Assistance?
- Where can I find contact information for my child's teacher? Our website directory is an excellent place to find our faculty and staff email addresses.
- How can I monitor my child's grades? HISD Connect Parent Portal is the spot! Click here for information on setting up an HISD Connect Parent Portal account.
- I have a question, but I'm not sure who to reach out to for an answer. If you have a question, you can reach out to your child's Homeroom teacher, Counselor, or Assistant Principal for assistance.
- I need to schedule a meeting with a teacher, what do I do? Please email the teacher(s) you wish to meet with and allow them 24 hours to respond. Teachers are provided with a planning period each day, so they will send you those times to schedule a meeting. You can also call the main office at 713-295-5240 and leave a message for the teacher.
- I feel disconnected now that my child is in middle school. How can I get involved? This is easy. Join the PTO and attend the regularly scheduled meetings. We also recommend you attend the sporting events, fine arts performances, and PTO events throughout the year.
