Welcome to the Cloud!

Your guide to discovering the benefits of cloud applications

Welcome to the Course!

Hello everybody! A few bits of information before we get started -

  • This course is will be administered over 2 days - Day 1 is a 2-hour face-to-face session, and Day 2 is a 2 online session.
  • This training course will have approximately 20 attendees, all of which have basic computer knowledge but have a general understanding of the cloud;
  • The face-to-face portion of this course will take place in the computer lab (don't worry, there are plenty of computers in there for everybody);
  • I would have to say that this course implements the "minimalism" learning theory because the course does not cover on every single last detail about the cloud tools. It does, however, give a broad, overall training of the tools and allows the learner to fill in the blanks with the specifics (since a majority of these tools are common among other applications). The benefit to this is that it allows the learner to jump right into trying the tools out for themselves.

Day 1 (Face-to-Face)

Agenda

Google Forms

8:00 AM - 8:10 AM

Learners will all create a Google account that they will use through the training.

We will also listen to a brief 1:30 audio interview.

8:10 AM - 8:25 AM

Learners will create a Google Form, using whatever components he/she wants. They are encouraged to create a Form that meets some sort of end-goal for them (not just random components).

8:25 AM - 8:40 AM

Learners will share the Form with whomever in the class he/she chooses. He/she will then collect responses and analyze those responses using the built-in responses tab in Forms, or by exporting the responses to a spreadsheet.

Dropbox

8:40 AM - 8:50 AM

Learners will all create a Dropbox account that they will use through the training.

We will also watch a brief 1:00 video introducing Dropbox.

8:50 AM - 9:00 AM

Learners will create a folder within their Dropbox account. After creating the folder, they will learn how to make it collaborative, as well as share it with others to use.

9:00 AM - 9:20 AM

Learners will upload files (of their choosing) into their own Dropbox folder, as well as their partner's collaborative folder. By the end of this portion, every user should have at least 2 files in their Dropbox account.

Slack

9:20 AM - 9:30 AM

Learners will all create a Slack account that they will use through the training.

We will also watch a brief 2:00 video introducing Slack.

9:30 AM - 9:40 AM

Learners will create a channel (a chat) that will be used throughout the rest of the training session. Users may choose to create more than 1 channel, but only 1 is required.

9:40 AM - 9:50 AM

Learners will add participants to the channel(s) that they just created - you may invite anyone from the class that you'd like.

9:50 AM - 10:00 AM

Learners will send messages, share files, etc in the channel(s) that they created earlier in the training.

Final Project

For your final project, I want you to work with a group to perform a task that involves ALL 3 tools that we've learned about. It doesn't need to be 1 continuous, but think of a project that involves the use of all 3. Use Forms, Dropbox and Slack as a group, and then submit a description as to how you used all 3 together.

Have fun!
