Eleanor Roosevelt Elementary | Fall 2023 Issue
Welcome to the Fall 2023 Issue
Thank you to all Students, Parents and Staff of Eleanor Roosevelt who contributed to this first issue for the 2023-24 school year.
It was a busy Autumn at Eleanor Roosevelt. We attended a ceremony for our new playground blacktop, we had Fire Prevention Assemblies, we practiced emergency-preparedness drills, we welcomed two new Police Officers to the ER Family, and we attended an assembly on our Schoolwide Positive Behavior Plan. We also held our annual Halloween Parade and parties!

Fire Prevention Assemblies
Submitted by: Ms. Rumbelow and Ms. Young
Eleanor Roosevelt Elementary School celebrated Fire Prevention Week by inviting three local firefighters from the Falls Township Fire Company to give a presentation for each grade level about the importance of fire safety.
Firefighters Mark Dolton, Nate Nelson, and Michael Bradshaw covered a lot of important topics. They had students demonstrate Stop, Drop and Roll, spoke about the importance of checking your smoke alarms and having a meeting place with your family, and showed students the full gear a firefighter wears.
They also talked about not being scared of firefighters, and demonstrated how difficult it is to hear the firefighters when they have their masks on. They explained to students the importance of screaming and yelling so that firefighters can hear them through their masks and get to them as soon as possible if they are stuck in a fire. Students then had the opportunity to ask questions at the end of the presentation.
Thank you to the Falls Township Fire Company for taking the time to speak with Pennsbury students about these important subjects!
**Pictured is Nate Nelson, ER Graduate! He fondly remembered his 5th Grade Teacher, Mr. Melnick, so we sent a picture and a text to Mr. Melnick who was so proud of Nate and thrilled to hear about his accomplishments. Click on Nate's picture to go to the Falls Township website.
Why Recess Should Be Longer
Written by: Madison W., Sham D. and Rhea R., 5th Grade
Argument
Reason 1: Kids need more time to socialize.
Reason 2: Kids need healthy, fresh air to breathe. Every single kid needs fresh air outside and time to keep their body and lungs healthy to make sure they have enough air.
Reason 3: Sometimes kids get too stressed over work.
Reason 4: All kids need physical education other than PE because PE isn't every day and all kids need physical education at least twice every day.
Reason 5: If kids donβt get enough time outside then they will be distracted.
Counter Argument
Reason 1: Kids need more learning time.
Reason 2: Kids' behavior can change because they might have been crazy during recess so their behavior might stay the same because they want it to be longer.
Reason 3: If they're being made fun of (be kind to everyone and everyone will be kind to you) they might want to come in early.
Reason 4: They need more learning time to practice and study skills.
Reason 5: Playing games can tire out kids so kids make an excuse not to do their school work because they are too tired and don't want to focus.
Reason 6: If they have too much free choice they might take advantage of having that fun extra stuff that they really need.β€ππ€Ύπ»ββοΈ

Kids-Walking-4-Kids on October 27th
Eleanor Roosevelt held their annual Kids Walking 4 Kids event on Friday, October 27th. Each year, we come together as a school to honor and celebrate particular students at our school that have medical needs. This event is created by the Kids Walking 4 Kids Committee, led by Brian Doron (PE Teacher) and includes, Kate Werth (PTO Co-President), Kaylyn Santangelo (School Nurse), Samantha Young and Hannah Rumbelow (Student Council Advisors), Roger Kean & Jason Miller (DJs/5th Grade Teachers). This year we honored a 5th grader, who faces complications due to a heart condition, a 2nd grader, who has Type 1 Diabetes, and another 5th grader, who is blind and visually impaired. The school raises money leading up to the Kids Walk, by coloring a sneaker and turning it in with their donation to be hung up around the school. At the end of the day on Friday, students went outside and walked around a large track on the field to be united and move together to support our honorees. ERβs Student Council purchased bracelets for all students to wear, as we walked around the field in unison and βChalked the Walkβ leading the way from the school to the track field. This year's bracelet was tri-colored and had a special meaning:
Red = Heart Awareness
Blue = Diabetes Awareness
Pink = Vision awareness
The lettering on the bracelet was embossed so that it was raised for our vision-impaired student to feel the letters on the bracelet.
In the middle of the field was a large heart, where students had the opportunity to run if they would like, after each lap. Each grade level picked a color to wear for the walk, as another way to honor our three students. In addition, ERβs PTO provided decorations for the walk, and worked with the Kids Walk Committee in working with CHOP to donate a portion of the money raised. Eleanor Roosevelt raised a little over $250 to donate to CHOP from this yearβs Kids Walking 4 Kids!

Mrs. Baccari & Mrs. Bria/Ms. Rumbelow's Buddy Activity
In October, Mrs. Baccari's and Mrs. Bria/Ms. Rumbelow's classes met for a cross-curricular collaborative Buddy Activity. Each Kindergartner was given a pumpkin and the 3rd Grade students supported their little buddies. Students worked cooperatively to complete various activities such as measuring the height and width of their pumpkin with unifix cubes, measuring the circumference using string and a yardstick, and guessing if their pumpkin would sink or float and testing out their hypothesis. They also weighed their pumpkin, drew a picture and wrote about something that is bigger and smaller than their pumpkin. Students helped each other to document the data in their pumpkin books. Thank you to Dave Flanagan, the Manager of Giant Food Store in Yardley for the generous donation of pumpkins used for this fun and educational activity.

"I Am" Poetry in Mrs. Sendlock's Class
Written By: Gracie E., 4th Grade
I am kind and energetic
I wonder how my fish are doing
I hear my soft voice
I want to be a baker
I am kind and energetic
I pretend I can run as fast as a cheetah
I feel my mommy's soft hands
I touch my puppy's soft paws
I worry about sad and scary stuff
I cry when I am sad
I am kind and energetic
I understand things that my mommy says
I say kind words
I dream of all sorts of stuff
I try my hardest at dance competitions
I hope my dreams will come true
I am kind and energetic

I am athletic and smart
I wonder if I will ever hit a home run
I hear the bat hitting the ball
I want to be the best player ever
I am athletic and smart
I pretend to be Bryce Harper
I feel the grip of the bat
I touch the stitching on the ball
I worry if I donβt get good grades
I cry with joy
I am athletic and smart
I understand if I am not perfect
I say I love baseball
I dream of hitting a walk-off Grand Slam
I try to be the best
I hope to be the best
I am athletic and smart

I am wild and energetic
I wonder what Iβm going to be when I grow up
I hear a cat barking
I want to go skydiving
I am wild and energetic
I pretend like Iβm invicible
I feel happy and excited
I touch all the shelves at grocery stores
I worry if Iβll be successful
I cry when my pets die
I am wild and energetic
I understand pets canβt live forever
I say you can do almost anything you put your mind to
I dream Iβll be a soccer player
I try my best at school
I hope I do good in school
I am wild and energetic

I am nice and silly
I wonder why people die
I hear the waves from the ocean
I want a puppy and long hair
I am nice and silly
I pretend Iβm a scuba diver
I feel happy when I am at school
I touch the water
I worry my mom and dad will get a divorce
I cry because Popβs brother and cousin died
I am nice and silly
I understand that people die
I say treat people the way they want to be treated
I dream that I will live on a farm
I try gymnastics
I hope there will be world peace
I am nice and silly

I am silly and joyful
I wonder what I will be when I grow up
I hear horses galloping in the meadow
I want peace for everyone
I am silly and joyful
I pretend I have three sisters
I feel so happy for my friends
I touch a unicorn's mane
I worry the end of the world is coming
I cry for lonely people
I am silly and joyful
I understand nothing is perfect
I say anything is possible
I dream I will fly
I try to do good in school
I hope I am included in everything
I am silly and joyful

Meeting Roman Dellapena
Submitted by: Mason G., 4th Grade
One day I went to a big scooter contest, and I was looking for Roman Dellapena. I was about to give up and then I SAW HIM! So I followed him and he signed my helmet. I asked him to do a flare and of course, he did it, so after all that, I went over to watch the other scooter riders.
After about 30 minutes I found a parking lot. I saw there was a grind rail, so of course I had to try it. After, I saw Roman getting into his Supra. Also, if you know... Supras are loud. Then he left so I went to see the bmx riders. After about ten minutes,we left and stopped by Seven Eleven and bought snacks before we headed home.
We stayed home for an hour then we went to our local skatepark. My dad and I rode around for a little bit, and I was close to landing a tailwhip. Then it was late so we left. It was a fun day going to two skateparks and riding and meeting Roman Dellapena and watching him win the contest.

I hear the buzzer when a goal is scored
I want to challenge a good team

I pretend to take a shot
I feel lucky when I get a break out
I touch my stick on the ice
I worry if we are going to lose
I cry Iif we lose the game

I dream we win this
I try to play as hard as I can
I hope we win this
I am active and happy

Character Council
Submitted by: Mrs. Sendlock, 4th Grade Teacher
Character Council is up and running! We have started out by coming up with ideas for the basketball game for the end of the year that 3rd, 4th and 5th Graders partake in.
Hopefully youβve noticed that we have started a new technique with tickets. Whenever youβre seen being responsible, respectful, and safe, or if youβve earned a golden ticket youβll get a ticket.
If youβre in 3rd, 4th, or 5th youβll be asked if you want a chance to be chosen to play in the game.
If youβre in 2nd, 1st, or Kindergarten youβll be asked if you want the chance to come and watch the game and youβll get to lead the freeze dance at half time. We hope you are liking our new ideas and we will continue to come out with more.
Student Council Update
Submitted by: Ms. Rumbelow, Student Council Advisor
Student Council is up and running for the 2023-2024 school year. Each homeroom in grades 3 - 5 held their own elections to select their homeroom representatives. We had our first meeting where we planned and got ready for the Kids Walking 4 Kids. Additionally, we had our officer elections where we voted for Secretary, Treasurer, Vice President, and President. Our winners were the following...
Secretary - Kylee Finn
Treasurer - Caitlyn Little
Vice President - Jackson Foschetti
President - Akash Gaba
Our next meeting will be after Veterans Day and we will be planning some fun for the Annual Turkey Bowl and our first spirit day of the school year!
