Controlling a Society
"Don't you see the whole aim of Newspeak is to limit the range of thought?... The whole climate of though will be different. In fact, there will be no thought, as we understand it now"(52-53)~Book 1, Ch. 5.
This quote truly displayed to viewers the power of The Party in 1984. The government needed to control its people as much as possible, and they knew that if they could alter their minds then they could have ultimate control. By limiting what the people could say they also limited what they could think. "Knowledge is power" is a popular quote that speaks on how being intelligent will allow you to also be aware and by "dumbing" the people down it decreased their awareness of government control.
