Bayou Cane Adult Education Center
For the last two years I have been teaching English at night to many students with different countries of origin. It has been rewarding to see the appreciation of those that are now where I was more than forty years ago when I first came to this country in 1970 via the Freedom Flights from Cuba to Miami. Even then, we knew that coming to Louisiana was going to give us, a better opportunity to learn English and make our new life in this country free to do as we wanted a goal for our family. We did, and I thank God for his blessings. Fleeing a communist country that still is ruled by the same regimen was the most traumatic event in my life, but the best decision my dad ever made.

This is me, many years ago, before I became a mother, while working as chemist, attaining my Bachelor degree from N.S.U. and later a teaching certificate and a Master in Education. I have been a teacher for seventeen years, and more recently a grandmother. If you go to the STHS website you can see the latest version...I'm still smiling, just a lot older.
A.S. Sugar Technology NSU 78
My first degree, an Associate Degree in Sugar Technology, was the beginning of my twenty years in the industry. In the raw sugar (brown) I met my husband and later raised my children. My oldest child was born in 1982, while I was working in what was known as Supreme Sugar Refinery (white) where I was the Chemist for seventeen years until its closure. Many things changed after that, including my carrier.
B.G. S. 1988
While still working at Supreme I finished my four year degree. Although It was fun living across the street from the factory; going home for lunch and check on my first born watching As the World Turn soap on TV, by the time I finished we had already moved to another company house at a raw sugar mill closer to Thibodaux, where my husband worked. There my younger son was born in 1995, by that time I had already decided not to move away when the refinery closed. I returned to N.S.U. to attain my teaching certificate and to come to teach Spanish at ST where I had done my student teaching.
