A Peek at the Week

We had another busy week at school. I truly enjoy popping in on all classrooms to see what your children are learning. This week, the pre-k classes were learning all about the 5 senses. Our preschool and pre-k classes have different thematic units on a monthly, bi-weekly, or weekly basis. A thematic unit incorporates all subject areas across the curriculum, such as math, language arts, social studies, and science that connects into the main theme. For example, with the 5 senses theme children's activities across the curriculum will all be based around the 5 senses. Each activity will have a main focus toward the thematic idea.

Why are we using thematic units in the early childhood classes?

1. It increases students' interest

2. It helps students understand connections

3. It keeps students engaged

4. It draws on connections from the real world and life experiences

5. It helps young children achieve higher levels of learning

Be sure to discuss the weekly or monthly themes with your children.

On Wednesday, we had another Lockdown Drill with Detective Jeff from the Elmhurst Police Department. Detective Jeff observed our lockdown drill and gave us positive feedback. Teachers did a fantastic job explaining the lockdown to students, and your children did a fantastic job and remaining calm and quiet. We have also created a crisis management handbook. We would like you to know that we have taken every precaution possible to keep your children safe while at school.

We are still going outside for recess unless it is super cold or raining. Please be sure to dress your children warmly for outdoor recess.

PCA Language Program Approved by the Illinois State Board of Education

Awesome News!

PCA has been approved by the Illinois State Board of Education as an Approved Ethnic School. Our application for Ethnic School Foreign Language has been approved. This means that our foreign language program meets or exceeds the standards required by the State of Illinois. Our current students may receive foreign language credit when they go to high school. We are very proud of this news. Our students begin studying the Greek language in preschool, so it's wonderful that they may be able to utilize that experience in their future education.
