The Will to Lead
Part III: The Skill to Teach
Step One: Identify an Area of Instruction for Improvement
"There are many instructional areas in which teachers can further develop their skills by using responsive activities. The areas teachers choose no doubt depend on their content-area focus, the grade level they teach, and their student population, to name a few variable. We encourage teachers to take the first step of developing a responsive pedagogy by identifying an area of instruction to assess and then infusing responsive activities. For the purposes of this book, we identify four broad areas of instruction that we think of as "school staples"--areas in which all teachers in all classrooms, regardless of grade level or content area, should strive to implement responsive best practices both effectively and efficiently. These four areas include (1) classroom management, (2) academic vocabulary, (3) academic literacy, and (4) learning environment. To be clear, the first step in developing a responsive pedagogy is for teachers to identify any area of instruction in which they desire to improve and then continue with the steps to develop their specific skills within that area."
