Technology, Pedagogy, and Content Knowledge
The Unicorn
The Ostrich
The Showman
The Gamer
The Antique
None of these are fair generalizations, but...
The Ostrich - We all know these teachers with their heads buried in the sand. They either don't truly understand the nature of any of the aspects of education, or they are clueless as to how to put them together. Sadly, these teachers often do not know that they are ostriches.
The Showman - Showmen have their hearts in the right place. They are trying their best to integrate technology, and they are very capable in their field, they just don't know how to reach their audience for authentic learning. Walk by their classrooms, and they look good, impressive even, but take a closer look at the students, and there is no quality impact taking place.
The Gamer - Ahh, the students' favorite class. Miles of engagement, tons of excitement. The gamer knows what motivates kids, and they know how to reach them for deeper understanding. Unfortunately, the Gamer is lacking the Content component in their classroom. Either they are weak in knowledge base, or they are disregarding their SE's. Like the Showman, the Gamer's classroom looks impressive, but pay closer attention to the details and you'll see the void.
The Antique - Districts may see a larger number of Antiques than any others. For years, we've been taught that the key to an effective classroom is Instruction & Curriculum. Teach the right content with the correct pedagogy, and you're golden. Antiques have to start listening to the new rhetoric - that's not enough anymore. To ignore the technology is to choose to NOT prepare your students with 21st century skills, educational malpractice.
