CASH Fifth Grade
"Little House on the Playground"
Project due next Monday, March 16
We are studying figurative language such as metaphors and similes. Today, we read My Dog is as Smelly as Dirty Socks by Hanoch Piven. In this book, a child draws pictures of her family, but decides the picture doesn't really depict each family member's personality. She uses similes (comparisons using like or as) to describe each family member and creates a new picture for each person.
I have asked the students to create a picture of himself or herself on a quarter piece of poster board. They can use construction paper, paint, pictures from magazines or the internet, and/or objects around the house. The picture should be similar in style to the example to the right. Also, the students should include the similes depicted in the picture. The similes for this example would be:
Sneaky as a snake
Eats like a pig
Strong as a baseball bat
Amusing as a game of marbles
For grading purposes, this will count as an English test grade. I will be looking for similes that the student believes describe himself or herself and that are printed on the poster. The picture should include the objects used as comparison in the simile. (Example - snout for eats like a pig). Neatness and creativity are included in the grade!
Students brainstormed ideas for the project today and should have placed the page of ideas in their backpacks. It is due next Monday, but you are welcome to encourage your student to get this done and turned in earlier!

Memory verse for tomorrow
Our verse for tomorrow is:
A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches,
Loving favor rather than silver and gold. Proverbs 22:1
Students will be reciting it in chapel and will be tested on it. Stirlin will lead the verse in chapel this week.
