Leap Into Literacy: Grade 1
Fall 2018
Calling All Word Detectives!
The Word Detectives Unit of Study in reading workshop taps into the power of play to support word-solving skills in fun, engaging ways. Students will be invited to become detectives-in-training as they learn to locate and problem-solve challenging words.
As you prepare to launch the Word Detectives Unit of Study, you will want to consider gathering magnifying glasses, finger flashlights or small windows cut from cardstock and...Detective Badges of course! See the link below for badges that can be copied on colorful paper and proudly displayed by new detectives!
Let's Celebrate!
Share this family cover letter at the end of your narrative writing unit and keep the celebration going at home for your students! Consider modifying this cover letter for each unit of writing to keep parents active participants in their children's developing writing skills.
Begin Countdown to Launch!
Remember to read the Reading and Writing Workshop Unit Overviews before you launch every unit of study! Located on the MTPS online cybrary, these overviews provide summaries of the bends within each unit, as well as lists of recommended materials to gather prior to launching. Most importantly, expectations for student progress are outlined, which helps to identify your students’ areas for growth. Reach out to your building’s Reading Development Teacher for help with locating these overviews, as well as planning for each unit.
