THE FRIDAY FORECAST

THE WEEK OF AUGUST 24 - AUGUST 28 2020

Thank you to our Parents!

Last week, our teachers filled out a survey on technology tools that would help enhance Distance Learning for our staff & students. At Tuesday night's first Walnut High Community Club meeting of the school year, members voted to approve up to $9000 to purchase tools to help our Walnut High School students and teachers. Your donations made this possible so thank you Mustang Families for your continued support.

Some of the technology tools that were already purchased this week to enhance Distance Learning include:

  • EdPuzzle: Edpuzzle is a web-based interactive video and formative assessment tool that lets users crop existing online videos and add content to target specific learning objectives.

  • Screencastify: The most common way teachers use Screencastify in the classroom is to create instructional videos for their students. Good instructional videos enable students to learn at their own pace, whenever and wherever they prefer.

  • Sunflower for Science: Sunflower for Science is a collection of animations, simulations and other kinds of software to help teach and learn difficult concepts in school science.

Social Emotional Support for our Students

  • In 1997, 2004, and 2018, National studies found that school connectedness and family connection were the two most important factors predicting positive outcomes for students during their high school years.

  • It is critical that WHS, our students, and their families continue to improve our connection to each other.

  • At WHS we work to ensure that there are many layers of support that surround each student. Our goal is that if a student needs support, they are able to obtain support by choosing from several options.

  • The "Need Emotional Support" option on our webpage provides students a way to privately reach out and ask for support. Based on the student’s initial request, a staff member will reach out to first ensure their safety and well-being and then to listen. Often students need someone to listen as they process concerns they are having. Based on the issue, the responding staff member will assist the student to make connections to family members or other supportive WHS faculty who can help.
