Our Path Note Topic
This year brings new hope, inspiration and also challenges. Nevertheless, we can prevail.
Although masks and vaccinations are optional/voluntary, we strongly encourage our staff to wear a mask whether vaccinated or not. There is much disagreement to whether masks are effective, but we believe it is in the staff's best interest to wear masks when inside and when around groups of adults and/or children.
We have updated protocols in place this year for learners, staff, volunteers and visitors. Those protocols reflect the districts current Health & Safety Plan.
A CDC representative, during a webinar to county officials, stated that the CDC believes the COVID-19 Delta variant will peak during the month of September. However, they do expect the virus to begin to wane due to an anticipated 90% immunity rate by the end of the fall. The immunity, he suggested, will be due to natural immunity, those who have had the virus, and those vaccinated.
Depending on the cases of the virus in our schools, we may have to reinstate mandatory masks for a temporary period. However, our goal is to provide our learners an environment as normal as possible by not requiring masks.
WASD has worked over the summer with the Department of Defense to provide COVID-19 testing to students and staff. Each of our nurses are being trained how to administer the test tomorrow, August 19. The test is an anterior nasal test that is less invasive than the deep interior nasal test (24-48 hours results), and much more accurate than the oral swab rapid test. However, if our cases spike or cluster, a form of rapid test for quick turnaround will be provided.
Have a great school year. Thank you for all you do for our kids. You do make a difference!

Piece of the Puzzle
This Week's Piece of the Puzzle is Sharon Levick. Sharon has had a super busy summer processing all the personnel transfer and new assignments. Most of her work is behind the scenes: setting up interviews, posting positions, reviewing clearance information, and on boarding in some of the most essential areas. In addition, Sharon was instrumental in planning two WASD job fairs in July. Her ability to multi-task keeps WASD in compliance with human resources. Sharon is an outstanding piece of the puzzle to so many current and new WASD employees.
