Essex High’s recycling app selected as Vermont winner for national STEM competition
EHS was recently named as the Vermont state winner for Samsung’s 10th Solve for Tomorrow competition. Students in the Environmental Club, STEM Academy and Mobile Development class recently got together to brainstorm ideas for the app, more details can be found in this article from The Essex Reporter
Students in advisory to start second semester
All EHS students will be in their advisories on Jan 24, 27, 28 & 29. We will be selecting courses for next year
STEM Academy Assembly on Mon, Jan 27
All STEM Academy students will report to the auditorium during flex on Mon, Jan 27. We will be presenting information that is important for course signups for STEM Academy students.
STEM Lecture - Thurs, Jan 30
A panel of engineers in their first five years of working at GlobalFoundries will talk about their careers in a STEM field. This talk will be in the auditorium during flexblock.
STEM Friday - Fri, Jan 31
Students can choose from the following events for our STEM Friday on Jan 31.
- Design and 3D print - Learn to use design software and then 3D print your creations. Mr. Stapleton, Library Computer Lab
- Science Olympiad - We will continue our preparation for the VT Science Olympiad Championships at UVM on Saturday, Mar 14. All students who are planning on competing MUST attend this meeting, there are new events this year and we need to finalize the team structure. C114, Ms. Vanoli and Ms. O'Neil
- Math Madness - EHS students will compete against each other in this "just for fun" competition, Ms. McNamara, Math Department Office, C108B
- 3D printed hand build - We be continuing our build of a prosthetic hand. Check out this video to see a recipient's reaction to receiving their hand. D104, Mr. Horne
- Injury Review and Wrapping - You will learn about some common injuries and how to wrap them with orthopedic tape. C112, Mr. Labonte
- Intro and Intermediate Arduino Programming - This activity is for beginner or intermediate users. The Arduino is a programmable microcontroller that can be used to control and automate almost anything. Sometimes this is called Physical Computing. You can attend this even if you didn't go to the earlier meeting. Limited to the first 12 sign-ups. C211, Mr. Chase
- Mobile Apps with React Native - React Native is a programming language that allows you to write apps that will work on Apple and Android phones. This introduction will show you how to write a basic app and get it working on your phone using the Expo emulator. Mrs. Smith, Library Computer Lab.
- Recycling App - This workshop will be a continuation of our work on this award-winning recycling project. EHS was recently named a State Finalist in the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow competition and we will be working to advance further in the national competition. The session will be devoted to researching, collecting and photographing common recycled EHS items that will be integrated into the Recycling App. All are invited to attend, but previous participants are strongly encouraged to attend. Assembly for students interested in the academies - Mon, Feb 3
All 9th graders and any interested student in 10th and 11th grades are invited to attend an informational assembly about the STEM Academy, the Academy of Visual and Performing Arts and the Global Leadership Program on Mon, Feb 3 during flexblock in the auditorium.
Teen Science Cafe - Sat, Feb 8
This cafe will focus on remote sensing and the presenter is Jarlath O'Neill-Dunne, the Director of Vermont's Spatial Analysis Laboratory. Participants will get hands-on experience with cutting-edge drones used in his lab. It will be held in the UVM Davis Center from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM and there will be free pizza.
