Adventure Ed
Adventure Ed forms were sent home last week. Please sign them and send them back so your child can participate in wellness class between May 8 and May 18. If you would like to volunteer we are there on B days from 10:20-11:00. I believe the volunteer slot is longer than our class, FYI.
Field Trip Permission Slip
Yesterday I sent home a blank field trip permission form. As spring is here and we want to explore our campus I need permission from you. This form will be used solely for the purpose of walking around the school campus: high school area, the woods and wetlands, and the bird observatory. There will no walking on any streets. You can simply sign the bottom or if you are more comfortable filling out the form you can add NA campus for the destination. Thank you!
Writing
Biographies will come home today. Your child worked very hard so be sure to celebrate their accomplishment! We have been writing poetry the past two weeks. They have learned haiku, diamante, acrostic, free verse, alliteration, couplets, and more! We have gathered inspiration from all over the school for our work. We hope to make a poetry book with our favorites by the end of the year.
Math
We have finished fractions, perimeter, and shapes. We have started multiplication and are using four main strategies/tools to problem solve. The children are loving "times" and create their own story problems to solve with each other. Greg Tang has an excellent site to practice multiplication and differentiate based on skill level. Explore the site for games and resources. http://www.gregtangmath.com/

MAP SCORES
These scores will come home on Friday. Keep in mind we had not covered fractions, shapes, multiplication, or finished time when this test was taken. I encourage you to tell your child what a great job they did and leave it at that, they worry so much. We will take our addition/subtraction test, AIMSWEB, in the next few weeks and I am beyond proud of these children and their fact fluency!
Reading
The class has been on a big kick lately writing their own plays! They are so cute creating their lines and props. They change the endings to familiar stories, add in new characters, and truly have to comprehend the text when writing a play based off of a favorite book. This is such an excellent and authentic way to build fluency in reading. They don't even realize it makes their writing stronger too!!
Genius Hour
We are meeting again tomorrow with 3rd grade to hopefully finish up our presentations. We will have a better idea of when we can present to you then. I will email out as soon as we set a date so you can plan accordingly. It will be during the day however, evenings are very difficult with all the spring sports right now.
I know the newsletters have been sparse lately and I apologize. I do add to twitter almost daily so I encourage you to check that if you are interested in what is happening in our class. @Shelcervantes
Have a great week!
