Please be aware that an unusual number of absences due to symptoms most likely related to the Norovirus have been reported today. Please refer to the Norovirus Fact Sheet below.
Norovirus: Noroviruses are a group of viruses that cause gastroenteritis (GAS-tro-en-ter-I-tis). Norovirus is known incorrectly as the “stomach flu”. Norovirus is NOT related to the flu (influenza), which is a respiratory illness caused by a different virus. Norovirus illness usually begins 24-48 hours after exposure but can appear as early as 10 hours after exposure. Symptoms usually include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach cramping, but a low-grade fever, chills, headache, muscle aches, and a general sense of tiredness may also be present. The illness is usually brief, with symptoms lasting one to two days. Noroviruses are very contagious and spread easily from person-to-person. The virus is found in the stool and vomit of infected people. People can become infected in several ways, including eating food or drinking liquids that are contaminated by infected food handlers, touching surfaces or objects contaminated with norovirus and then touching their mouth before handwashing, or having direct contact with another person who is infected and then touching their mouth before handwashing. Children and staff exhibiting symptoms of viral gastroenteritis should be excluded from school or other group activities until two days after their symptoms have stopped. Frequent handwashing with warm water and soap for at least 20 seconds is highly encouraged as alcohol-based hand sanitizers are NOT effective against the virus. It is important to note that most household cleaners are ineffective against norovirus; a diluted bleach solution is the most reliable means of disinfection (https://www.epa.gov/pesticide-registration/selected-epa-registered-disinfectants). Norovirus can survive on surfaces for many days unless disinfected.

What to do if your student’s bus is canceled? :
My student’s bus is canceled, what do I need to do?
Please know your Sayre Car Rider Number and if the student’s parent/guardian cannot pick up the please be sure to share your student’s Sayre Car Rider number to the Emergency Contact who will pick up your student from school.
Make arrangements to transport your student to and from school.
If your student’s routine plan is to ride the bus home please email your student’s teacher and sayre@slcs.us to communicate your student’s bus cancellation dismissal plan.
Make arrangements to transport your student home using the Sayre Car Rider Process (formerly called Parent Pick-Up) from school and if the person picking up your student is not their parent/guardian then that person needs to be listed in your student’s. All families have been assigned a Sayre Car Rider number. Knowing the number makes the pick up process move along more efficiently.
Please ensure that the individual who picks up your student from school to transport home in a private vehicle completes the Sayre Sign In/Out Form (linked here in blue text) for End of the Day Dismissal or visit: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfID6XRt9c-2fl9N6nWiZsQIq7KTS_1Tymq2jyq7p-FLKPexw/viewform
