BARFIELD BANNER
FEBRUARY 2023
A MESSAGE FROM YOUR PRINCIPAL
We are off to a great start in 2023! Students have been busy the last few weeks with the end of quarter 2 and both district and state testing. All our students worked hard and set goals for themselves prior to testing. They were then able to celebrate their growth and accomplishments. I encourage you to take the time and speak with your child about the growth they have made over this past quarter. We are incredibly proud of them!
As we move into February, we have many exciting events taking place. On February 1st, TBE will hold our annual Student Led Conferences. These conferences are a great way for parents to learn about their child’s progress inside the classroom. Students will lead these conferences and share various forms of data and work with their parents. Classroom teachers will be reaching out to parents regarding times for that day. Many teachers will have other slots available for parents (typically in the morning) if you are unable to come the afternoon of the 1st. Students are looking forward to sharing all the wonderful things they do in their classroom with you!
Another exciting event we have coming up is Family Leadership Night. As a Leader in Me school our students engage in various activities that showcase the great leadership opportunities, we have here at TBE. This event will be held on the evening of February 16th from 4:15-6:30. All parents will start the evening at 4:15 in the cafeteria and then will participate in student-led rotations throughout the school. Our students are excited to share their knowledge of the 7 Habits with our parents!
In addition to Family Leadership Night, TBE will be hosting our 2nd Annual Leadership Day on March 10th. This will be another opportunity for our student leaders to shine and display various forms of leadership qualities for our guests and community members. As a reminder, Leadership Day is created for educators and community members and is not a parent event. We are looking forward to both opportunities!
I have had several questions regarding parent lunch and upcoming dates. The dates below are set for the rest of this school year. While they will still be on the monthly calendar, giving you the dates in advance might help if you are planning to attend. We appreciate the feedback that we have received for these lunches and look forward to continuing to provide opportunities for our parents to interact on campus.

TBE has done this fundraiser before and it was a great family activity! Use the following link to purchase tickets. The game will begin at 7:00 pm. www.BladesTix.com/Tommie
Please be reminded of our dismissal procedures. If you child has a change in dismissal, you must notify the office prior to 2:00 pm. Send an email to TBEdismissal@collierschools.com so that the office can make sure your child gets to the correct dismissal location. Parents of Zone 1 and Zone 2 walkers, please do not switch the students dismissal locations without the school being notified as each of these changes causes disruption during dismissal time.
Also, if you have made a trip down Bermuda Road, you probably have noticed our new sponsor banners! Sponsors names will be located on the back of our TBE Leadership Day shirts this spring as well. Thank you to all our TBE sponsors for your support!
As always, please reach out if you have any questions. Looking forward to another great month ahead!
Sincerely,
Alyssa Ledbetter
ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL MESSAGE
Dear TBE Families,
Below are some friendly reminders as we start our second semester that will help keep our students prepared, healthy and their school day running without disruptions.
These are very important procedures that need to be followed to set your child up for success:
- If you are sending food to school, please send healthy treats and/or lunches to school with students so that we do not have to interrupt class after the first bell has rung @ 8:10.
- Be Proactive and ready for school. Having laptop & power cord, homework, lunch money, water bottle and backpack.
- Any transportation changes for the end of the day need to be sent as email request to TBEdismissal @collierschool.com with a copy of Driver’s license. All changes must be received prior to 2:30.
- Write students name on Jackets. If you are missing a jacket/sweater, students can check in lost and found items in the cafeteria. It is full!
- Be at school on time! The TBE News starts at 8:15. If your child arrives after that time, he/she is missing important announcements!
- If your child is going to be absent for ANY reason, the front office needs to be called. 239-377-8500.
Thank you for your attention to these important reminders! We look forward to a smooth and successful 2nd semester!
Dana Franklin-Riashi, Assistant Principal 😊

FIRST GRADE NEWS
As we wrap up the first half of the school year, it is fun to look back and reflect on all that we have learned and all the fun that we have had!
Before break, we spent some time sharpening the saw with Gingerbread Day and Field Day. The students had a blast planning and decorating their gingerbread houses, as well as showing off all the skills they have learned in P.E. this year during Field Day.
Now that we are back into the swing of things, we are continuing our reading module about American holidays, symbols, and monuments. Students have a great time learning about the history of our country and all the ways we celebrate that history. They have continued to practice locating and using text features to better understand their reading. We also had a chance to read some poetry and identify some of the ways that poets make poems so fun to read!
In Math, we finished our unit on addition and are shifting the focus back to subtraction and how we can use subtraction in real world situations. Students continue to practice the strategies they have learned and are working towards applying the relationship between addition and subtraction to solve both types of problems. Please take time to review the math letters sent home with each unit for great ideas on how to assist your student.
As always, we so appreciate your support at home with nightly reading and any additional homework. We are looking forward to a great second half of the school year!

SECOND GRADE NEWS
In language arts, the topic for Module 6 has been weather and how it affects us. The students have been reading stories about weather. Many of the stories were used to teach how text features- including titles, headings, captions, graphs, maps, glossaries, and/or illustrations- contribute to the meaning of texts. Identifying different characters' perspectives in a literary text was another standard that was taught through the stories included in this module. This module also had an emphasis on opinion writing. Students wrote opinion essays on their favorite pets which included reasons and examples to support their opinions. Then as a culminating activity, they wrote an opinion piece on their favorite kind of weather. Please continue to encourage your child to read nightly so they can take quizzes on the books they have read and earn Reading Counts points.
In math, the students have been learning about measurement. They have been measuring various items in inches, feet, centimeters, and meters. They have also learned how to find the perimeter of polygons. The next math unit will introduce addition and subtraction of 3-digit numbers within 1,000. The students will use a variety of problem-solving strategies. It is important for the students to have computation accuracy when solving these complex problems. You can help your child with accuracy by using the addition and subtraction flash cards for nightly practice to develop fact fluency.
In social studies, the students learned about different Native American cultures and the regions of the United States where they were located. In science, the students are learning about the needs of plants and animals and the different habitats in which they live. As a culminating activity, the students are busy creating habitat dioramas on a selected habitat. We look forward to viewing their habitat creations.
The Second Grade Team
THIRD GRADE NEWS
We are starting the third quarter outright! Third graders have been hard at work learning new things!
The students are still working on their multiplication fluency in Math. Multiplication is a large part of the 3rd grade math curriculum and the students have been singing their facts songs. Please have your child continue to practice these songs at home along with their flashcards. The students just finished our fraction unit. They are starting to learn about perimeters now in class. They will be using strategies to find the missing side of a shape when a perimeter is given to them.
In Reading, the students are continuing to learn about text features and identifying the main idea in a text. In Writing, the students finished writing an expository essay about animals and how they survive throughout the seasons. In Science, the students learned about how light can be reflected, refracted, and absorbed. In Social Studies, the students are identifying different contributions from various ethnic groups in the United States. The students are also starting to create their products for our Annual Market Day!
Please continue to read with your child every night and practice multiplication facts. We appreciate all your help and support at home!
The Third Grade Team
FOURTH GRADE NEWS
Wow, time is just flying by this year in fourth grade. It is hard to believe we have settled into the third quarter already. Our fourth graders worked so hard on their quarter 2 benchmarks and FAST assessments. Now, more than ever, it is crucial for students to be in school, all day every day, as much as possible as we head into the push towards Spring state assessments!
Science in February brings us to completion of our research project about space exploration and its impacts on Florida. Then we will start our unit on the properties of matter and magnets, and the conservation of mass. In Social Studies we will be turning our focus to the Civil War and reconstruction in Florida, and how that affected the industry in Florida.
In math, we finished our unit on multiplying whole numbers and fractions. We will be moving into Unit 11, which involves decimals to the tenths and hundredths, addition and subtraction of decimals, and problems involving money. Please make sure your student is practicing their multiplication and division facts as these skills are crucial to being successful in math.
Reading this month continues digging deeper into text features, text structures, theme, and central idea along with many other comprehension strategies to help better prepare us for becoming the best reader we can be. Remember fourth graders should be reading for a minimum of 40 minutes every night for homework. Asking your student questions about what they are reading can help build their comprehension skills.
Leader in Me has us diving deeper into Habit 6: Synergize. Our students have been actively working on and displaying this habit through our “Connect for Success” lessons. We are focusing on valuing other people’s strengths and learning from them. We are looking forward to sharing all that we know about Leader in Me at our first annual Leadership Family Night on February 16th at 4:30. Hope to see you there!
We are so thankful for your continued support at home. We are now more than halfway through the year. We would like to tell our students they are now rising 5th graders. We are very proud of how hard they are working, but we need to stay focused so we can finish quarter 3 strong.
Thank you!
Your Fourth Grade Team
FIFTH GRADE NEWS
We have had a great start to 2023 and are excited about all the learning ahead. Please continue to encourage your child to budget their time wisely. It is important to plan when preparing for projects and class tests. In addition, all students should be reading nightly. We invite you to read with your child, if not an entire book, a magazine or newspaper article. Discuss the main idea and details, compare, and contrast ideas, and discuss the author’s purpose for writing. It is imperative that your child has automaticity with his/her math facts. Please encourage your child to practice for a few minutes nightly.
We are continuing with our learning and practice of the 7 Habits daily and hope that it is flowing over to home and community. We have been discussing our goals and visions in class and invite you all to consider setting family goals and/or creating a family vision board. It is a great family activity and encourages us to Begin with the End in Mind. J
If you have any questions/concerns, please reach out to us. As always, we thank you for your continuous support and for being our partner in education.

Intermediate students in grades 3 & 4 learn block code programming using the next course in their code.org website accounts and other coding tools, such as robots. Grade 4 works with Dash and Dot programmable robots.
Entrepreneurship Classes Grade 5
The Entrepreneurship Teams created and shared Microsoft Forms containing customer feedback questions to help them improve their concept and prototypes. Following this, teams are building their brand, including developing a logo, and a tagline/slogan/jingle for their product. To end the month, teams are presenting their Product Pitch to our very own TBE Shark Tank – Mrs. Ledbetter, Mrs. Riashi, and Mrs. Skudnig!

Reading Counts news: First through Fifth graders have read 43,189,698 words so far this year. Students in grades 1-5, have taken and passed 6,189 tests on Reading Count Books.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION NEWS
Did you know that all our TBE students run at least once a week for 10 minutes in PE class using the Marathon Kids program to track their mileage? And our 3rd-5th grade students have the opportunity to run an additional two days per week with the run club program before school. Students have a goal of running at least three laps (0.6 miles) during our warmup time, and if completed they receive a sticker for their running card. As a school we have completed over 5000 miles this school year! Not only is this a great opportunity for students to increase their heart rate and physical fitness, but it also allows them to develop a passion for running and living a healthier lifestyle. Because of the amazing work that our students have put fourth, Marathon Kids decided to focus on our school and write a feature article about the running program here at TBE: Marathon Kids TBE Article

COUNSELING CORNER
Dear Parents/Guardians,
February is the perfect month for noticing kindness displayed in our families! At school, we call noticing positive behavior “CALLING OUT THE GOLD.” When you have a meal together or you’re traveling in the car, you can lead the family in sharing kindness you have noticed in other members of the family. Think of specific instances—this will build up all members of your family.
