When and Where his Birth Took Place:

J.R.R. Tolkien was born on January 3, 1892 in Bloemfontein, South Africa. His father was Arthur Tolkien, his mom was Mabel Tolkien.

Family Life:

After J.R.R. Tolkien’s father, Arthur Tolkien, died Tolkien and his brother settled with his mother in Birmingham, England, when he was four years old. In 1904, his mother, Mabel Tolkien, died so Ronald (J.R.R Tolkien) and his brother, Hilary were sent to live with relatives in boarding homes.

Student Life:

Tolkien went to Oxford University to study studied Classics, Old English, German languages, Welsh, and Finnish. He later came back to be a professor at the university and started writing The Lord of the Rings.


the Anglo-Saxons were people of German descent on the 5th Century to the Norman Conquest. They spoke old English which was very different from English now.

His Work:

Some of J.R.R. Tolkien's books include Sir Gawain & the Green Knight, Unfinished Tales, The Silmarillion, The Two Towers, The Lord of the Rings, and The Hobbit.

Influential People:

No one influenced Tolkien except himself. He was going over an exam and got bored and decided to doodle on his paper, so he drew a hole in a hill and put a short man outside it with a wizard. He then wrote “...there once was a hobbit.”, and the story was born.

Influential Factors:

When he was a professor at Oxford University, he was in a writing group called the Inklings, and in its members included C.S Lewis and Owen Barfield. While grading a paper he started writing about a "hobbit."

Who he has Influenced:

With his success on his novels, Tolkien inspired many other authors. Some of which include Robert E. Howard, William Morris, George Macdonald, G. K. Chesterton, Edward Jones, and Edward Smith.

About "The Hobbit"

The Hobbit was published on September 21, 1937 and attracted audiences of all age. It was a huge success. It was later adapted to the screen on December 17, 2012 and grossed almost $3,000,000,000.
