Carlow International English Language School

Carlow International English Language School Ltd. (CIELS) is an indigenous Carlow business, founded sixteen years ago by Dave (BA, M. Ed.) and Catherine Barron (HLO). Danny Barron (BBS, Cambridge Delta), a Cambridge-qualified English Language Graduate, has recently joined the business.

English Language Tourism (ELT) is a potential source of ‘new’ money that flows directly into the local economy. Hitherto, its value has been largely unrecognised. Failte Ireland research shows that each ELT visitor is worth €400 per week into the local economy; that is the equivalent take-home pay of many a full-time job. This money flows to the heart of local spending: host families, food stores, schools, cultural educators, transport, shops, social and entertainment outlets all sustain jobs through this source of income.

Danny is currently developing a new programme with certain European colleges. Third-level students from these colleges will come to Carlow to complete a module of their training in Carlow Institute of Further Education. They will also be placed, for a few weeks, in a Carlow business appropriate to their career training; experience has shown the local business benefits from up-to-the- minute skills of the trainees while also supporting the local economy.
