Black Friday
Or is it Grey Thursday?
The History Of Black Friday
In the 1900's when a store manager was doing paper work they would use red ink for a store loss and black ink for a store increase. Holiday shopping, which seems to start after thanksgiving, seemed to be when the stores switched from red ink to black ink. This is where they got the name Black Friday. Also, another reason it is named this is because the factory workers in the 1950's always called the day after Thanksgiving Black Friday because no one every showed up for work. But times have changed, with this more than 41.8 million people start Black Friday shopping on Thursday..
Gray Thursday
Black Friday Creep
Some stores may be taking it too far this year. There is much controversy that the Black Friday Creep is going to ruin many Thanksgivings. Over 1 million Walmart employees will have to work on Thanksgiving because of this. Not only is it ruining the Thanksgivings of these employees but its destroying the Thanksgivings of the families of dedicated Black Friday shoppers. In these articles I have read about the Black Friday Creep the controversy in the comments and polls added were quite interesting. Many people still feel that 'Grey Thursday' won't be effecting people's family time like it is being made out to be. However, I believe Christmas should come after Thanksgiving. Is 'Gray Thursday' too much?
I recently read an article referring to the Black Friday Creep turning your Thanksgiving into Gray Thursday. Originally, store doors opened a couple hours earlier the day after Thanksgiving, not making an issue. As Black Friday 2013 comes to be this year many stores are opening up mid-afternoon on Thanksgiving and staying open till closing times on Black Friday. This has become quite the issue because this means the people who are made to work holidays at these stores will potentially miss out on Thanksgiving. Also, the very dedicated Black Friday shoppers are most certainly going to feel obligated to cancel their Thanksgiving plans to start their Black Friday shopping. http://www.nj.com/middlesex/index.ssf/2013/11/poll_has_black_friday_gone_too_far_is_gray_thursday_too_much.html
Some Stores May Be Taking It Too Far
My Black Friday "Grey Thursday" experience.
I have never been amused by the idea of going shopping all night just to get 5 dollars off on some deals. However, this year I seen the Best Buy deal for the Samsung Galaxy S4 was free! I couldn't pass up the deal since I have a slight phone addiction. The deal started Thanksgiving night at 6. My dad offered to go with me and fight the nonsense. When we arrived the line outside the building was already pretty long and wrapping around the building. This worried me since I was quite worried about getting trampled. A worker was outside passing out tickets for items. This would guarantee you the item you were waiting in line for! This made me quite happy because I knew that there would be no rush of people getting in the store, no trampling, and no injuries! However, after getting my phone we decided to go over to Wal Mart and check everything out. We walked in the store and made the quick decision to leave because the line to check out went all the way through the store and people were running around and it was quite chaotic. I liked the way Best Buy organized there store and they were ready and had a safe way to go about Black Friday.
