The purpose this year is for families to use this opportunity to create a seasonal message or greeting that shares their traditions and cultural background. If families speak another language at home, it would be awesome to have the message created in that language! Designs are due by November 30th, but can be brought into the library any time before then. Students must include his/her name and teacher's name on the project.

Garnet Valley CTC Quick Tip #11 2017-2018
Statistics are taken from the 2015 Pennsylvania Youth Survey results for Garnet Valley - 6th, 8th, 10th, and 12th graders. Any statistics reporting student use and access to substances are only for those students who reported using that particular substance.
Did you know? Students reported on their lifetime use of the following categories of prescription drugs that had not been prescribed to them; human growth hormone and steroids, narcotics, tranquilizers, and stimulants. The rates are listed in order as follows: 6th 0%, 2.5%, 0%, and 0%, 8th 0%, 2.5%, 0.3%, 0.6%, 10th 1.5%, 5.8%, 1.8%, 3.6% and 12th 1.7%, 4.6%, 2.5%, 9.1%. While our numbers are low, they rise, as students get older. Any number of students misusing prescription drugs is concerning. The CDC and NIDA have cited a link between the misuse of prescription drugs for pain and addiction to heroin.
Call to action… Too often students perceive prescription drugs in any form as safe. Parent/guardians can combat this perception and model safe practices with prescription medications. For more information from the National Institute on Drug Abuse see below.

Attendance Line Update - Important Information
Hello Garnet Valley families! We continue to update and refine our attendance procedures for student absences in order to comply with the new Pennsylvania truancy laws. Increasing communication with parents/guardians will make it more likely for students to avoid being truant. Beginning, Monday, November 27, you will now receive an automated call alerting you if your child has been marked absent. This call will remind you to provide a signed and dated note within three days of your child’s return to school stating the reason for the absence. Students who have been absent more than ten times in a school year require a doctor’s note for the absence to be excused. You will be asked to contact the main office if you believe to have received the automated call in error. Attendance calls will go to the first number listed on the first parent/guardian contact in Alma. To update the phone number that will be called when a student is absent, please first update your phone numbers in Alma. Please call the school office to change the order of the contacts if needed. Since families will be contacted for each absence, the attendance line will no longer be needed. Therefore, beginning on November 27, you will not need to call the attendance line to report a student absence. Thank you for your support!
Drop-off, Pickup and Dismissal Reminders
Students arriving after 8:50 AM must be accompanied by an adult and walked into the main office. All changes in dismissal must be accompanied by a note from a parent or guardian. If your student attends the YMCA, you must also notify the YMCA of any changes.
Please do not use the Bus Loop during the following times:
8:20 - 8:50 AM
11:15 - 11:40 AM
12:15 - 12:40 PM
2:45 - 3:20 PM
Changes in a student's dismissal (examples: daycare closing, early dismissal, alternate stop, etc.) must be reported to the office in writing 24 hours in advance and is the responsibility of the parent/guardian.
Thank you for helping us ensure our students' safety.
