EACH night the students should be recording their reading time on the October calendar page in their agendas. They know where this page is and should be able to record it themselves. An adult just needs to initial it each night :).
- Please send a snack with your child each day. Please do not send any drinks other than water- juices are sticky when they spill! Thank you! (remember that we are peanut and treenut free)
- Please check and sign your child's planner every night.
Math Updates
In Math this week, we reviewed frames and arrow routines from last year, but added multiplication and division problems! These rules help us focus on patterns of numbers and help teach us when we need to use specific operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. We also reviewed more multiplication number stories with arrays!
Our last lesson of Unit 2 focused on explorations and we looked at fraction circles. We got a hands on experience of fractions being part of a whole and solved problems asking about the different fractions. We also learned about area and how objects take up space. We had to compare the measurements of the Everyday Math Deck, an eraser, a base 10 block, and a sticky note using square centimeters and square inches. We even got a taste of how to compare liquid volumes and learned that a liter is unit of volume and that is how we can measure the amount of liquid an object can hold.
On Wednesday, we reviewed for our Unit 2 Test playing a fun interactive review quiz game called Kahoot and worked in small groups to help us prepare for our upcoming Unit 2 Test on Thursday & Friday.
Next week we will dive into Unit 3!
Building a READING LIFE
In Reading this week, we had quite the emotional ending to our first reading unit by finishing our beloved, Stone Fox. WE celebrated everything that we have learned so far in our first reading unit. Students were able to reflect and share their most treasured memories from the story. We discussed possible alternate endings to the book as well as another chapter that could be added to the text. Children continue to build a successful reading life in third grade!
Later this past week we dove into our Mystery Unit! We discussed and shared all we know about solving mysteries and how to read them! We learned that readers of mysteries ask themselves "What's the mystery here?" and they also ask "Who is the crime solver?" We are going to love this reading unit!
Word Study
Regular Word Study this week! :)
This is the schedule:
Monday nights- Students are to sort their words and record them in their notebooks. They are to also record their discovery or rule for the week.
Tuesday and Wednesday nights- Students should sort their words and read them as they sort. They can practice writing them on paper, whiteboards, or typing them. NO WRITTEN homework is required on these nights.
Thursday nights- Students are to ask an adult to quiz them on their words. They write the headers and then record the words as they are called out. The adult should use the notebook to correct the sort and ask the student to practice any words that were spelled incorrectly. This should be completed in the word study notebook in their binder.
The notebook will then be returned to school Friday morning and handed in to me :).
Friday- there will be a test given
This means that before the notebooks are handed in on Fridays there will be...
1. an answer key made of the sort and discovery in class during sort introductions
2. Monday night homework practiced/written sort and discovery.
3. a blind sort and written discovery on Thursday night.
Writing Long & Strong
This week in Writing, we focused on Using Editing Checklists to help us refine and revise our narrative stories. An example of an editing checklist could be 1. Read your story, adding "will this make sense to a stranger?" 2. Check the punctuation. 3. Do your words look correctly spelled to you? 4. Make sure your paragraphs work the way you want them to in your story. 5. Don't forget to check for dialogue. We learned that there are many different writing checklists you can use to help you become a successful writer, but we must be sure that we are rereading our stories to see if they make sense.
Another great editing strategy is to share your story with a partner so a fresh set of eyes or lenses can help you edit your story and make it the best that it can be!
We also started publishing our narrative stories and will continue to do this to help us prepare for our writing celebration next Friday!
Special Areas
Gym- In Gym, the kids are working on cooperation and leadership skills while preparing for physical fitness testing.
Art- In Art, the students are continuing to study the American Artist Elizabeth Murray and working on creating a collage painting based on the her work. They painted objects which will be cut out and glued together.
Music- In Music, students will be reading and performing quarter note, paired eighth note, quarter rest and half note rhythms. They will be practicing these rhythms on non-pitched percussion instruments. Also, they will learn a pentatonic song and accompany it with Orff instruments.
Library- In Library, the students are doing partner research while practicing the use of the dewey decimal system

Technology
This week, students posted their word study words and activities into SeeSaw.
We also continued to use Google Classroom, and Book Creator during reading and writing this week to help us publish our narrative stories after we are finished writing the final drafts. We will continue this next week as well.
Simple Machines
n Science this week, we continued to work simple machines.
We started the week learning that wheels overcome friction. We used a brick, string, and our push-pull meter to test how much force it took to drag the brick without wheels. Then using the same materials and dowels underneath the brick, we learned it takes much less force to move the brick with the help of rollers which are a kind of wheel. Wheels make it easier to move things by reducing the friction between the object and the surface over which it moves.
We ended the week learning about the wheel and axle simple machine and that it transmits and magnifies force. We learned that the tradeoff when using a wheel and axle to do work, you can use less force by turning the wheel, but the force must be applied over a greater distance.
