When a story is based on a historical event, it is very important to know the characters and setting to understand it.
Introducing the Characters
As narrator evaluates the newcomers, we find out that they were a race of people unknown to him.
The mystery is unlocked!
At the end of the story, the name of one of the strangers is used, and their comment also gives us a clue to the identity of the narrator.
Who was Miles Standish?
He was an English military officer hired by the Pilgrims. He came over to the New World on the Mayflower.
Our narrator is a Native American, and the strange race of people are Englishmen.
Once we know who the characters are, the setting becomes clear.
