Goal Notebooks
Your child will be bringing home their Goal Notebook every Friday. Please make sure it is returned on Monday so it can be used to help us learn throughout the day. In this notebook you will find items that correlate with the goals your child is working on inside sheet protectors. These are things you can help your child with over the weekend. Behind those are tabs. Each tab is for tracking our learning in a specific subject in school. Right now we only have math and sight words that we are tracking. It is so much fun to see your child take charge of their own learning, know exactly what they need to be practicing, and which goals they have met!
Math
We will be beginning our unit on addition/subtraction to 12. This is the beginning part to our learning target of: I can add and subtract to 20. We will be learning several strategies to help us add besides using our fingers. If you have time, please help you child memorize their doubles facts: 1+1, 2+2, 3+3, 4+4, 5+5, 6+6, 7+7, 8+8, 9+9.
I do have some websites to help your child practice adding and subtracting.
Writing
We will be learning about and writing about Christopher Columbus.
Also, feel free to visit my website and go to the writing tab. There are some fun games in green.
Sight Words
Please help your child read their sight words. They cannot sound out the words. They have 2 1/2 minutes to read all 50 words. Your child should pass Quarter 1 words by next week to stay on target to read all words by the end of the year.
Reading Skills
We are working on text features. We will find them in non-fiction texts and learning about how they help us when we read non-fiction texts. Examples of text features are: bold words, photographs, table of contents, etc.
Reading / Phonics
We are assessing this week to see how your child is progressing in their phonics skills. You can really help by going over Vowel Town with them. (This is in their Goal Notebook). Point to different places on it and have your child say the sound and then do the same thing, but have them spell the sound.
FYI
- We go to the library on Thursday mornings. Please leave your child's library books in their backpack so they can trade every week.
- Please return the Field Trip forms if you have not already done so.
- No School on Friday, October 11.
- Conferences will be held on the 23 and 24 of October. The 23rd is an early release day and the 24 will be a No School day for students.
- October 18 is Picture Retake Day.
- October 22 is our first Academic Celebration!
