Schoolwide Communication
Monday, May 17, our 8th graders will have the opportunity to celebrate the end of their middle school years with field day. We will meet in advisory classes after lunch, and then students will be able to choose from several activities and spend time with friends. We will end our celebration with an 8th grade walk (outside unless it is raining). Be sure to have your student dress in a way that they will be comfortable outside, but keep in mind we will have some alternative indoor activities if it is raining.
ATTENTION 8TH GRADE PARENTS:
If you haven't already done so, be sure to submit your proof of residency to Mrs. Villarreal this week at villarrealj@lisd.net
Awards Assembly:
Our teachers and administrative staff have put together an Awards video to announce all students receiving an award from a staff member. We will play these videos during advisory on Monday, and as students are announced, they will be allowed to step out into the grade level pods to receive an award and get a picture taken. These videos will be uploaded to our Griffin website once students have seen them in advisory. Virtual students will have the videos available to them during advisory as well on Monday. We will have their awards/certificates in the front office after advisory.
PTA Wants YOU:
As we wind this year down, we are already into planning for the 21-22 school year. We will have some PTA executive positions open for next school year, so if you are interested in taking a leadership role in supporting the GMS students and staff, please email at garrisonh@lisd.net so I can get some information to you! Even if you aren't sure about leadership, I hope you will plan on joining next year and helping in ways you are able!
Counselor Information:
Please check out the SMORE from our LISD counseling department right HERE.

They also MUST pass at least science or social studies to promote. If your child does not pass any or all of these classes, then they will need summer school or to be retained in the same grade level next year. Summer school flyers are listed below. There is no virtual option for summer school, and each class costs $150. A bus can be provided for an additional $125. Online registration will open next week and teachers/counselors will begin reaching out if you need to register. Please email your child’s teachers if you have any questions.

Schoolwide Information
Teacher Appreciation Week:
Next week is National Teacher Appreciation Week. As you know all too well, this year has been especially trying for us all! Our teachers have done a phenomenal job of handling last minute changes, new safety procedures, teaching platforms, and much more! Please take a minute to email some of your favorite teachers and let them know you appreciate them!
Yearbook Sales:
We will begin handing out pre-sale yearbooks on May 5th. Pre-sale will be those students who have paid for their books online before the May 5th. We currently have 70 books left to sell this year, and they will be sold out. Online purchases take 24 hours to clear and show up on the receipts as paid. If you are purchasing on May 5th or after then those will be handed out on May 10th. In past years, we have sold 100 books the day of hand out. This year we do not have 100 left to sell. Therefore, we do not anticipate many to be available after the 10th. If you are wanting to purchase please do not wait. You can click on the link below and order yours now. https://www.balfour.com/texas/the-colony/griffin-middle-school
Allergies and Perfume/Cologne:
Spring is in the air... and that means lots of allergens floating around! One type of allergen we don't often consider is contained in perfumes and colognes. As much as we all want our middle schoolers to smell great, the scents can be disturbing or even harmful to others who may be allergic. Therefore, please help us monitor this by having your student wear it in moderation or not at all. No students should be carrying it with them in school because accidental sprays and spills can quickly become an issue for someone who is allergic. Thank you for your help with this over the next few weeks!
With only 3 weeks of school left, teachers and counselors have begun contacting parents of students who may have to take summer school in order to be promoted. Please be reminded that there is no virtual option for summer school. To help you determine if your student is at risk of needing summer school, you can look at your child’s MYR grade in SKYWARD, as that is the predicted end-of-year grade based on current average.
In accordance with Board Policy EIE Local, for grades 6–8, "promotion to the next grade level shall be based on an OVERALL AVERAGE OF 70 based on course-level standards (essential knowledge and skills) for individual core subject areas: a grade of 70 or above in BOTH mathematics and in ELA/Reading, AND a grade of 70 or above in EITHER social studies or science." If you have questions about whether or not your child will need summer school, please contact the counselors at bradleyj@lisd.net or colek@lisd.net.

Parent Survey from LISD:
Thank you to those of you who participated in the survey that was sent last week. Due to the low number of completed forms, we are sending paper copies home with every student today. You should have received a message from Ms. Bradley regarding these surveys earlier today. Please take a few minutes to complete the survey, and then send it back with your student next week. We will be collecting them all week to then return to the district office. We use the information you provide us to guide our planning for next school year. Your input matters to us!
Please check to see if your student accidently brought home one of our school iPads. These iPads are housed In light blue-green case. Starting next week we will track the location of these iPads and they will start making a pinging noise. If you find one of these devices, please return it to Griffin. If you have questions, you are welcome to email Mr. Cleburn at cleburng@lisd.net.
Lunch Room Reminder:
In recent weeks schools around the district are seeing a slight increase in the number of Covid-19 cases on their campuses. While we are still taking as many precautions as possible, we need help from our parents. We are noticing that students are sharing food with other students during lunch. Please remind your student that sharing food will quicken the spread covid-19 which can, in turn, cause more students to be quarantined. We don't want any students to be quarantined at home as we enter the final stretch of our year. Our administration, teacher, and staff thank you for your assistance in this matter.
Dress Code Reminder:
As the temperatures warm up, we ask for your help in ensuring our students comply with the school's dress code. As a reminder, students need tops that cover their mid-drifts, shirts cannot be low cut, and should cover all undergarments. Other prohibited tops include halter tops, tube tops, or tops that expose shoulders. Shorts must be at least mid-thigh in length around the front, back, and sides of the shorts. Our school dress code applies to all students. Thank you for your help in this matter.
Reminder of Shot records for Incoming 7th graders:
All current 6th grade students will need updated shot records before the start of school in August. Because we know many students may get yearly physicals during the summer months, we want to put this on your radar now. Please see information regarding which shots are required below:
The Texas Department of Public Health requires that all students entering 7th grade receive both a Meningococcal/meningitis vaccine (MCV4) and a Tdap (Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Pertussis/whooping cough) booster before school starts this fall. All students going into the 7th grade must have proof of having the Tdap and Meningococcal vaccines or apply for a conscientious exemption form through the state. Your child may have already received the vaccines and simply needs to provide proof to the school nurse. To find out if your child has these immunizations you can call your healthcare provider or locate the paperwork from their latest pediatrician’s appointment. There will be no grace/extension period for the implementation of this requirement. By law, if your 7th grader is not fully immunized for meningitis and Tdap, he or she will not be allowed on campus until proof has been provided.
