Color Wars
As you can see the blue team is out to an early lead with the Orange team not far behind.
Teachers vs. Student Checker Challenge
It looks as though some students have polished up their checker skills as they took most of the day 1 match-ups!
Class Wars
The Freshman class is leading in class points, boasting a big lead over the Sophomores and Seniors mid way through the 1st Quarter.
WE’VE MOVED!
By now we are certain that most students have noticed that Mrs. Maluchnik and Mrs. Brown are not in their “normal” spaces. Thanks to lots of hard work by our custodians and support staff, the “guidance office” has moved into a completely new and beautiful space called the Comet Success Center.
In the Comet Success Center, found in rooms 108 and 109, students will be able to continue to work with Mrs. Maluchnik on their educational, social, and emotional wellbeing and goals; and they now can also meet and work with Mr. Larsen on career planning and goals.
The Comet Success Center is a wonderful hub of activity where you can find colleges, employers, military personnel and community members who want to meet with students about what their organizations have to offer. You will find comfortable places to relax before and after school, or when you just need a moment of peace in your day. Wednesdays in the Comet Success Center are fun because students could come in and get a small “treat” IF they can find our special “Wednesday” friend.
Be sure to stop in to check out the new space and let us know how we can serve you!
Seniors work with an admissions rep from Ohio Northern to see if becoming a Polar Bear is right for them!
We love our new, large, open space!
Comfortable seating and computer stations for students to use when needed.
Senior Happenings
Community Service opportunities are coming in - don’t wait to complete your hours! You can find a link to any opportunities from our website: Genoa Student Activities. We also have a link on our Google Classroom to check your status.
Remember Seniors, you must have a cap and gown to walk at graduation. If you did not order one Friday, contact Josten’s at 1-800-JOSTENS to order one ASAP.
- If you have not yet had your senior picture taken with Innovations, they will be at the high school October 19th to take the traditional head shot that will be used in the yearbook.

Comet Quiz Bowl Update
Chalk Walk Submission and Artist Statement
In reality we are very small, in our chalk project we captured this and transformed it into art. We compared our planet and other planets to the size of fish. The cat that is looking down into the fish bowl represents something greater and bigger than us. The planets are inside of a fish bowl which can be seen as a limitation or a boundary that as humans we have not went beyond. The overall idea of our creation is to show how small humans really are. We made this using chalk on a sidewalk outside of our school. First we did a rough outline in white chalk and then started adding colors. The planet in the bottom center is a representation of earth, this is in the center of the design because it instantly gives the observer something understandable and well known to draw their attention into the piece. The red, pink, orange and yellow planet on the left most part of the fish bowl is a representation of energy. These colors can be related to danger, we made this the largest planet not to be appealing to the eye, but because we are small and in space there are many dangers. The dark purple planet in the top left is a representation of mystery. The color purple is often associated with mysterious things and we used this color on this planet to show that in space there is mysteries that humans do not know of. The red and orange planet on the right side of the fish bowl are those colors to represent adventure, because we humans are slowly adventuring more and more into space. The pink and purple planet in the very center of the bowl is there purposely to represent excitement towards the future. Lastly the white stars throughout the black space represent purity and freedom, which is why they are spread throughout the whole black space. The cats eyes are green to represent vitality, something present in all living things. The cat is brown, tan and white because shades of brown are often associated with honesty, we used this because the whole idea of our creation is based on our honest ideas of how small we really are.

GENOA HIGH SCHOOL’S CORE BELIEFS
Earlier this Fall the Genoa Area Local Schools announced its core beliefs:
Champion for Kids
Expect Excellence
Carry the Banner
Be a Merchant of Hope
Future Ready
Your child’s daily experiences at GHS should be reflective of the core beliefs above.
Thus far at GHS we’ve devoted considerable time to the concept of our staff and students “Carrying the Banner” for GHS. We realize that you as parents and community members Carry the Banner as well! Everyone who has contact with GHS or its students carries our banner. Our hope is that the banner being carried says that GHS is a school where you’re proud to send your child to every day because you know they’re loved and respected and also challenged to be excellent!
I truly believe EVERY teacher, student and staff member who walks the halls of GHS is capable of extraordinary accomplishments! Whether we’re preparing the world’s most delicious chicken nuggets, waxing the world’s shiniest floors, teaching the pythagorean theorem or handling student discipline, the expectation for all is excellence in every way, every day. From students we expect excellent attitudes, effort and participation in their education. Does this mean we won’t struggle with new challenges or have moments where we feel like we just can’t do it? Absolutely not! If we’re immediately successful in everything we do, our vision is too narrow and our dreams are too small. Only through being bold in our thoughts and daring in our actions will we achieve excellence.
As we Champion for Kids, going the ‘extra mile’ must become our norm. Our goal will be to continually demonstrate to you as parents and the community as a whole the lengths we’ll go to ensure the success of students at GHS. As we Champion for Kids we’ll need your support as involved parents. In instances where we’re not meeting our standards we’ll be reaching out to you to share our concerns and in moments of accomplishment we’ll be there again to share great news. The decisions we make at GHS will be student-centered.
What does it mean to be A Merchant of Hope? Students, parents, and school leaders are faced with unique challenges which have different dynamics than any other time in history. We have to take time to be there to support each other in difficult times and remind one another tomorrow will be a better day.
Our students will be Future Ready! Upon graduation every one of our students should be employed, enlisted or enrolled. There are multiple paths to a meaningful life and GHS supports them all. During a student’s four years at GHS it is equally important for students to learn what they don’t want their career path to look like. Our plan includes opportunities for students to be exposed to multiple career opportunities in an effort to help students find their individual path to success. Our role is to help students find the path to success. Once on the chosen path, the responsibility for achieving success lies with each individual student.
As always,
Go Comets!
