Mrs. Van Delinder

First Place Recipient of the VFW High School Teacher of the Year from District 6. (District Six is Nassau, Duval, and parts of St. Johns and Clay Counties.) This award is given to recognize teachers who promote civic responsibility and patriotism. Her nomination is now entered in the state competition.

Mrs. Van Delinder initiated and coordinates an annual campaign, Valentines for Veterans, in which YHS students write letters to veterans in the veterans' hospital. YHS students have written as many as 330 letters in one year! Additionally, her own students also interview and write character sketches of veterans. At the Jan. 15th Award Ceremony, she stated, "It is exciting to see how our students are impacted by expressing their appreciation to these men and women who have served our country. It is also rewarding to hear from the veterans' hospital that the students' letters are greatly appreciated.

Sun and Moon

What better way to learn about rotation than learning to spin an antique top? Who says middle schoolers don't like to use hula hoops as that is what revolution is? Doesn't everyone wish to make a phase of the moon shirt to remind them of new content learned? Callahan Middle School teachers engaged students in a fun, hands-on learning as they began learning more about our sun and moon.
