Principal Thoughts...
Admiring all the spring flowers and even the rain reminds us that it is in fact springtime here in Washington. With spring comes the beginning of planning for next school year. While there are many (many) unknowns for the upcoming months, we continue to work very hard to partner with you in helping your children learn and grow. And, at the same time, we begin to prepare for their success next year!
Later this spring/summer, teachers will begin the process of creating class groupings for the 2020-21 school year. Salem Woods teachers devote much time, effort, and care in developing classroom rosters. The class placement process is very comprehensive. Our student placement process is guided by the following beliefs and principles:
Every child’s placement is important and deserves careful consideration.
Every Salem Woods teacher is dedicated to high academic standards and meeting the learning and social needs of each child.
Balanced classrooms should reflect our diverse society.
We also recognize that you may have additional insights that help us ensure a productive year. For those who would like to provide input regarding the classroom environment for next year, here is a link to the optional parent/guardian input form.
Please note:
Completion of this form is optional. All students will be given careful consideration for classroom placement, whether or not parent/guardian input is provided.
The information you provide will be shared with the appropriate faculty involved with your child’s placement – this includes your child’s teachers and next year’s teacher.
We likely will not be able to create classrooms that honor all requests, especially requests to separate children and/or requests regarding combination classrooms. Please know that we cannot accommodate requests for specific teachers.
Parents/guardians wishing to share input should complete the form online by Friday, May 29th.
We share the common bond of wanting what is best for your child. Students thrive when parents and teachers work together to provide the best learning opportunity for all children. We truly value and appreciate your partnership.
Warmly,
Stephanie and Jennifer
Attendance Matters!
Even now during our continuous learning, attendance matters. Student attendance is recorded on a weekly basis. If students are not engaging in online learning or another agreed-upon method with your child’s teacher, they will be marked as "not engaged" (absent). We track engagement in learning (attendance) when students engage in lessons/activities in Canvas, i-Ready, and/or Raz-kids as well as their attendance at Zoom meetings. We may also use emails from families or phone conferences to check in on student engagement (attendance) and learning. We are working toward 100% engagement, please help us get there.
Elementary Grading Update
The #1 priority for the state is that we will do no harm to our students' second-semester grades due to the COVID-19 closure. Given this guidance, Monroe School District has decided on a two-tiered approach to elementary school report cards. First, subjects fully taught and assessed from January 31st to March 13th will be graded just as we typically do (4 = above standard, 3 = at standard, 2 = approaching standard, 1 = not at standard). For the time period of March 13 to June 19th during our on-site closure, teacher feedback will be noted in the comment section of the report card, and reading, writing, and math only will be assessed as Proficient or Not Proficient.
Thank you!
Books, Books, and more Books!
Reading is paramount and Salem Woods wants to make sure that students have access to books during our school closure! Here are 4 ways that students can achieve this goal: (The first, second, and third option below can also be found on the Library Specialist page in Canvas.)
- Students can place up to 2 books on hold in the Salem Woods library. (Two books are the maximum amount of hold titles that Destiny will allow.) The books will be placed in a bag, labeled with the students' name, and can be picked up on Mondays and Tuesdays from 11:30-1:30 at the lunch station. Here is a short tutorial on how students can log in to Destiny and make this happen:

2. Students can access OverDrive, the Monroe School District’s digital library, for a large selection of Ebooks and audiobooks. Here is a tutorial on how to connect to and navigate through this system:

3. The Scholastic Virtual Book Fair being held from the 18th-31st of May.

4.(Not listed in Canvas) Bagged books from the book room. This option is coordinated directly between the teacher and student or student’s family. All books can be picked up from the lunch service station between 11:30-1:30, Monday-Friday.
All library books that were checked out before our school closure can be returned to the lunch service station from 11:30-1:30, Monday-Friday, from now until the end of the school year.
Thank you so much for all that you do! Please contact me with any questions that you may have.
Sincerely,
Nola Parker
