What is PBIS
October continues with our Fleming Fundamental: Be Kind. Morning announcements and morning meetings focus on what it means to be kind in what we say and what we do. Topics include empathy, compassion, generosity, inclusivity and sportsmanship. We are working hard to create a school where everyone feels welcomed and included! If you are in the school, check out our doors! Students are posting examples of kindness they have witnessed during their day.
Be on the lookout for your copy of our PBIS brochure. It includes a description of how we at Fleming work to create an environment that is safe and healthy. Read it over with your student - you will find a slip inside your brochure that you can both sign and return. Returned slips will be entered in a raffle for a $25 gift certificate to a local restaurant! Want a night off from cooking? Return your slip by October 23. We will announce the 2 winners in the 10/25 Fleming Flyer!
Fleming SEL
Welcome back to the new school year! My name is Cat McKelvey and I am the Social-Emotional Learning Coach at Thomas Fleming. I have served as a school psychologist for EWSD for the past two years and I am very excited to be joining the Thomas Fleming community in my new role. EWSD recognizes the importance of social-emotional learning (SEL) to both academic and personal success, and is investing in enhancing current practices and building additional capacity across the school district in this area. The district has chosen to utilize the CASEL competencies as the foundational structure for this learning. CASEL is an organization that provides a wealth of knowledge, resources, and research regarding social-emotional learning and I invite you to explore their work at www.casel.org. SEL at Home
Strong partnerships between families, schools, and community organizations are critical to student success and a foundational element of SEL instruction and I look forward to working with you in the future to serve our students. As the social-emotional learning coach, I will be working with school staff to continue to integrate these concepts and competencies into classroom instruction, identify additional supports and interventions to support this work, and participate at the district level to develop a sustainable plan for SEL in EWSD moving forward.
