From the District Office: COVID-19 (Coronovirus) Information
Posted Feb. 28, 2020
Our school district, just like all the school districts in Johnson County, has plans regarding infectious disease. As such, we are actively monitoring news and information about 2019 Novel Coronavirus, COVID-19. There will be ongoing discussions and collaborating with county and state health experts regarding Coronavirus.
The management of COVID-19, is, as expected, evolving with time and research. There is a global response to contain this virus and we will receive specific guidance from public health organizations. If there is any information that relates to students in USD 232, staff and parents will be informed.
It is important to remember that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) currently rates the U.S. and the state of Kansas at Low Risk for Coronavirus. Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) and Johnson County Department of Health and Environment (JCDHE) are actively monitoring this situation and will communicate guidance to school districts. USD 232 collaborates with JCDHE in measures necessary to contain communicable diseases, including 2019 Novel Coronavirus.
The district is cooperating with public health officials around this issue
to ensure that current practices are appropriate.
We are following the recommendations from the CDC regarding prevention actions:
- Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
- Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
- Stay home when you are sick (for the full recommended recovery time)
- Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
- Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.
- Keep sick children at home until they are fever-free for a full 24 hours without the aid of ibuprofen or acetaminophen.
- We continuously promote frequent hand-washing, cough and sneeze etiquette, etc.
- We perform routine, nightly cleaning at all schools. We target specific areas of the school for deeper cleaning and disinfecting based on reported illnesses and absenteeism.
- We pay special attention to desks, countertops, doorknobs, water fountains, etc., on a regular basis.
Information about Influenza
- If a student tests positive for influenza, they must stay home for five days from the onset of symptoms as well as be fever free for a full 24 hours without the use of ibuprofen and acetaminophen. If a student has been prescribed a therapeutic dose of Tamiflu, they need to stay home for five days from the onset of symptoms as well as be fever free for a full 24 hours without the use of ibuprofen and acetaminophen. The best way to stop the spread of the flu is stay home when sick.
The support and assistance of our school community when working to contain communicable diseases is vital. Teaching the foundations of healthy habits in the home, self-reporting illness, and keeping sick individuals home are important elements in the success of containing communicable diseases within a community. The diligence of our family partners in this effort is greatly appreciated.
We will be working closely with Johnson County Department of Health and Environment to adapt plans and responses as necessary.
