Hispanic Heritage Month-September 15-October 15
September 15th Hispanic Heritage Month: Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America. The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on September 15 and ending on October 15. It was enacted into law on August 17, 1988. The day of September 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September18, respectively. Also, Columbus Day or DÃa de la Raza, which is October 12, falls within this month.
Constitution Day-September 17th
The Constitution of the United States created America’s national government and fundamental laws, and guaranteed certain basic rights for its citizens. It was signed on September 17, 1787, by delegates to the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia. Under America’s first governing document, the Articles of Confederation, the national government was weak and states operated like independent countries. At the 1787 convention, delegates devised a plan for a stronger federal government with three branches—executive, legislative and judicial—along with a system of checks and balances to ensure no single branch would have too much power. The Bill of Rights were 10 amendments guaranteeing basic individual protections, such as freedom of speech and religion, that became part of the Constitution in 1791. To date, there are 27 constitutional amendments.

Update
1. Make sure they have a clean mask EVERY DAY. Mondays are the hardest so please make sure they have a mask in their hand before they leave your house or keep a couple of extras in your car.
2. If and when your child is quarantined or isolated, we need your help in getting their homework completed. Students will miss 10 to 14 days of school and if their homework is not completed, there is no time to complete it during the school day. For some students school is hard enough when they are present so when they are absent for many days coming back, they feel very defeated. School instruction continues even when your child is gone so please help us and your child out.
3. Going along with number 2, with our students missing 5 months of school, we have a lot of work to make up for. Any extra support you can do at home would also be beneficial to make up for that loss of learning. Please ask your child's teacher if there are any areas that you can help support at home. We are all in this together!
We are thankful for your continued support. Thank you for making this happen!

Cougars of the Week
Sunday, September 6
I hope you all are enjoying your Labor Day weekend. There will be no school tomorrow, Monday, September 7th. The weather has been beautiful but please keep your eye on the weather for Tuesday and Wednesday this week as it's going to be quite chilly.
Parent-Teacher Conferences will be held via ZOOM during these days and times: Tuesday, September 15th 4:00-9:00 PM, Thursday, September 17th 4:00-8:30 PM and Monday, September 21st 4:00-8:30 PM. Please use this link to sign up for your conferences. Parents will need to use the zoom link to attend the conferences. You will be in a waiting room until the teacher lets you into the session so please be patient as we hold many conferences in these evenings. There will be no school on Wednesday, September 23rd through Friday, September 25th for professional development and teacher compensation days for conferences.
We will complete MAP testing for grades 1 through 5 this week. This data will help us place students in reading support groups as well as drive our instruction. Please encourage your child to give their very best.
Reminders: wash the masks frequently and tell students not to share them with anyone. Also, if you are getting tested for Covid, please make sure your child stays home with you until you get the results. Notify the school as soon as possible. Our parents are doing great with this and this is why we continue to have our doors open.
