Cold Weather & Outdoor Recess
Dear Prairie Point Families:
With this first full week of December we are definitely getting a taste of the cold midwest weather! I thought it would be helpful to remind all of our families of our outdoor recess procedures and how we determine when students should stay inside for recess. Below is the procedure that is outlined in our Student Parent Handbook:
Recess is scheduled every day before or after the students eat lunch. As weather permits, recess will be outdoors. Since students need fresh air and exercise on a regular basis, please have your child dress appropriately for outdoor recess every day. Recess will be inside only on inclement weather days with significant precipitation and on days when the temperature (including “feels like” temperature) is below 10° F or when there is a heat advisory for K – 5th grade and below 25° F and above 90° F for early childhood. Students will be allowed to play in the snow at recess only if they are wearing snow pants and snow boots.
When the “feels like” temperature is 10° or higher, our K - 5th grade students will go out for recess. Our early childhood students go outside when the temperature is 25° or higher. Please keep this in mind and encourage your child to wear a coat, hat and gloves on days when we have outdoor recess. Additionally, please know that on days when there is snow on the grass, students will need to wear boots, snow pants, coats, hats and gloves to play in the snow.
We are very fortunate to have a Care Closet at Prairie Point. The Prairie Point Care Closet is set up for any student or family in need. The Care Closet includes things like basic hygiene items (deodorant, shampoo, soap, toothbrushes, and toothpaste), wardrobe standards (socks, leggings, gloves, hats, winter coats), school supplies (crayons, notebooks, backpacks, binders), and some basic household supplies (blankets, laundry soap, paper goods). If there is something that we can help you or your child with please reach out to our Prairie Point Cares email at: ptcares@sd308.org
Finally, please take a moment to review our car rider line reminders. Our staff will be outside, every day, to make sure that all students get into and out of cars safely. This includes days with inclement weather. We have worked very hard to have a car rider line that prioritizes safety and efficiency. When everyone follows the procedure and moves all the way forward, the line will move as quickly as it can and our students and staff will be able to get into the warm car and school! Thank you for understanding and following the car rider line procedure.
Once again, I wanted to thank our school community for your continued support and commitment. Prairie Point is truly a wonderful community that I am very proud to be a part of. As always, please do not hesitate to reach out to me directly if you have any questions.
Keep warm!
