Please JOIN US! as we bring together and Recognize! all the partners and participants in the Abriendo Caminos/Opening Pathways for Students of Color into the Teaching Profession project from 2017-2018! The event will highlight the collaborative participation of high school students, teachers/counselors, and UNLV team members in the #Love2TeachLV! programs at Chaparral, Desert Pines, Legacy, Rancho, Sierra Vista, and Valley high schools! The event will also acknowledge the extraordinary support of students' parents and other family members, including the project's parent volunteers! School site, CCSD, UNLV College of Education, NDE, and State educational leaders, scholars, and policymakers will join us! Please come CELEBRATE with us!

We are delighted to host Math Equity Scholar, Dr. Sylvia Celedón-Pattichis, as our keynote speaker. Her remarks, titled "Sí Se Puede”: Advocating for Broadening the Participation of Underrepresented Students in STEM," will focus on using equity and advocacy lenses, and asset-based approaches, to teach mathematics in order to broaden the participation of underrepresented students in STEM. She will describe how valorizing all students' cultural and linguistic funds of knowledge as intellectual capital is critical to achieve educational equity, especially in mathematics education.

Advancing the Mathematics Education of

Underrepresented Students through Access and Equity


Using video clips and student work as examples from the field, this session will engage participants in discussing research-based teaching approaches that can advance the mathematics education of all students, particularly for underrepresented students in science, teaching, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Access and equity are foundational components of the work of all teachers, including mathematics teachers. The following promising mathematical teaching approaches will be discussed: 1) creating a mathematics discourse community; 2) positioning students as competent problem solvers; 3) using multimodal representations; and, 4) advocating for students.
