AT-HOME READING SPOT
This week, help your child identify their own personal reading spot at home. It should be an area with little distractions, have good lighting, and be comfortable. By doing this you are promoting the use of good reading habits outside of school.
Look at this Crestview student's at-home reading spot!
Try this Reading Strategy with your child tonight!
While a student is reading, have them stop and cover a part of the text with their hand. Ask them to think about what they read. If they have trouble remembering, allow the student to peek. Once they can remember have them retell that chunk of the text in their own words. Continue doing this throughout the text.
When they retell, provide them these sentence starters...
1. When I read this chunk, I learned ____________________.
2. In this chunk I read__________________.
Why does this work? It helps students learn to identify when their understanding has broken down, or their mind might have wandered during reading.
