Kia ora koutou
Friday marks New Zealand's very first "Matariki Day" with celebrations planned across the country.
Here at school we have incorporated Mataraki into our Term 2 Inquiry alongside our learnings around Marae Protocol and look forward to our visits.
Students next week will also experience time on the Mountain learning about the Predator Programme, Department of Conservation Rangers are undertaking, and will have hands on experience making their own traps.
In Hāwera, on Friday 24th, we take this "Matariki" opportunity to release Hāwera New School's official name.
Everyone is invited to meet at the Hāwera High School at 8.30 and be invited in, to join in celebrating the announcement of our new school's name, hear the story behind the name and view the logo for the new school.
This is an exciting new beginning for the South Taranaki community and we hope to see you there.
Have a restful weekend

Students are learning about the marae and preparing for their visits next week. There is lots of fun planned, and yummy food! If your child cannot stay overnight they can go out for the day and you can collect them and drop them back the next day- just liaise with your child's teacher. We will be at Aotea Marae on Hastings Road. If the weather allows, students will also go up the mounga experiencing two easy walks, to Wilkies Pools and the Dawson Falls Loop then having a session with the rangers on making traps and snares. Excitingly they will be able to watch the snares digitally and see what is being caught on the mounga. In Week 10 we will be reflecting on all we have learned over the term about the history of our country, migration, rivers, the mounga, and how our country and culture have developed over time!
Students have experienced and learned a lot! Next term we are looking forward to an exciting term of Science!
Room 1 Marae building....
As an Inquiry class-project we were asked to make a replica of a marae. A marae is a Māori meeting place where whānau and friends have a hui (gathering), tangi (funeral) or just to socialise with family.
In our replica we have included everything that you might see at a marae.
This includes the waharoa (gateway), whare-kai (kitchen), wharenui (the meeting place), whare paku (bathrooms), papa whenua (the grounds) and last but not least the pou kara (the flag pole).
A marae is a place where you can stand and feel the sense of belonging and feel the power of awhi and aroha.
Kypreece Page-Oliver - Room 1
Room 5 having fun making Rakau and Poi for next week's Marae noho
As we are getting closer to Term Three we are holding camp meetings each fortnight to build connections between students and the teachers they will be away with. On Monday we had the first meeting, so your child will now know who the teachers are. As it gets closer, there will be more information come home such as medical forms and camp booklets.
Some camps still need more adults - Aunties? Uncles? Grandparents? If anyone would like to join the fun please let the camp leader or your child's teacher know.
Camp Taupo need two more adults.
Camp Whakamaru needs three more adults.
Out and About - this camp consists of day trips locally, to New Plymouth and Wanganui. Three adults are needed each day. You do not need Police vetting for day trips, and you can go on certain days if you are available, not necessarily all four days. Please contact Glenn if you can help!

Camp Whakamaru - Ahinekura Crawford - crawforda@hi.school.nz
Camp Taupo - Dawn Mendes - mendesd@hi.school.nz

Spine the Porcupine
On Friday 10th June (Teachers Only Day), I went to Hawera Primary School. I spent the day being a Tuakana Teina.
During the morning I visited all of the classes (7 in total) and read my story ‘Spine The Porcupine’ to all the students. This is a story I wrote at home when we had a week learning from home because of Covid. Mrs Shaw got it put into book form, including the pictures I drew.
I donated a copy of my story to the Hawera Primary School library. Some of the students said I had inspired them to have a go at writing their own story. This made me feel very proud.
After lunch I spent some time in Room 4 and Room 6 helping the teachers.
