Oakland Schools: Emergent Literacy
Virtually Exploring Emergent Literacy
Emergent Literacy - A virtual series will be taking place during the 2020-2021 school year! Oakland Schools is happy to be able to offer this at no cost to you!
While the anticipated Summer Literacy Academy-Emergent Literacy had to take a break this year due to Covid-19, professional learning opportunities about emergent literacy practices will go on!
Series Description:
This self-directed series will honor and explore the work of Dr. David Koppenhaver and Dr. Karen Erickson through the completion of several modules along with facilitated implementation support sessions with Dr. Diane Fekete.
This exploratory course focuses on emergent literacy for students of all ages, with significant disabilities. Individuals at the emergent level:
- Do not engage in meaningful shared reading
- Do not know that writing has meaning
- Do not know most of their letters most of the time
- Do not have a functional means of communication
Participants will engage in virtual learning through modules that introduce instructional methodologies targeting alphabet knowledge, shared reading, phonological awareness, independent writing and reading and teaching communication during academic instruction. Participants will be taught strategies that can be implemented immediately in the classroom. Each session in the series will have a virtual follow-up workshop to discuss what implementation in the classroom would look like and to problem solve around any questions or concerns.
