Welcome to 2021!

As we plan professional learning over the next few months, we are working hard to bring you very timely learning that is both data-driven and research-based.

We will be updating this newsletter regularly throughout the months of January-March, so please check back periodically to see the most current offerings.

Over the next few months, we will be scheduling our summer training. We are super excited about an event that will be taking place in June. See a sneak peek below of what is yet to come. It has been two years in the making.

Introducing Region 2's Inaugural Event - Tennessee Valley Edcamp

The Tennessee Valley Edcamp is an effort to connect all ten districts in our region and promote networking among our educators. This "unconference" style event is a free event for all educators in our region, as well as surrounding areas. Continental breakfast and lunch will be provided for all participants and door prizes will be awarded. This is a wonderful opportunity for teachers to share their expertise with other educators while learning about multiple topics in one day.

The Alabama Math Textbook Caravan website link is open for registration. See link below.

Participants may register for one In-Person or Virtual event. Events are divided into K-6 (In-Person), K-6 (Virtual), 6-12 (In-Person), and 6-12(Virtual). Presentations will begin at 7:45 AM and lunch will be provided. Presentation schedules will be posted on the caravan website prior to the event date. A time-sensitive link with presentations will be emailed to virtual attendees on the day of the corresponding in-person event.

All registration fields must be completed to receive presentation materials (Name, School/District, and Email Address)

CDC guidelines will be followed for in-person presentations. No-touch registration packets will be provided and will include a face-covering, hand sanitizer, and note-taking material.

The website will be updated with additional communication as needed.

Scholarships and Grant Opportunities (Educators and Students)

ASCA Arts Educator Fellowships

  • Recognition award for exceptional teaching and personal mentoring of Alabama students within one or more of the arts disciplines as defined by the Alabama Course of Study
  • Award Requirements - of the arts educator, enhancing creativity in the arts and educational practice.
  • Winners will receive an Arts Educator Fellowship for $5,000 that must be used to further arts educator’s career, enhancing creativity in the arts and educational practice.

Cancer Unwrapped Teen Writing Contest

Cancer Pathways (formerly Gilda's Club) has a mission of 'facing cancer together'. This writing contest is one of the ways we help teens and their families realize they are not alone. Details are provided to assist in sharing this information.

  • Annual event that encourages teens to write about their experiences for cash prize opportunities through giving teens a voice that encompasses an array of social identities and lived experiences.
  • Review of previous submissions read previous contest essays online or even watch one teen read his essay
  • Contest flyer available here.
  • Contest Eligibility and Guidelines: Open to students in the United States in grades 9-12; Essay length must range between 500-1,000 words; Deadline is March 14th, 2021 at midnight PST; and Cash prizes of $1,000 will be awarded to the winners

Ninth Annual School Counseling Poster and Essay Contest

  • Eligibility and General Guidelines: Participants should be current students in Alabama schools, grades K – 12; Grades K – 2: Submit a poster; Grades 3 – 12: Submit an essay; Only 1 entry per student is permitted.
  • Entry Expectations: Reflect the following designated theme: Grades K-11: What are School Counselors, and how do they help students? How have you been helped? And Grade 12: How has a School Counselor helped guide you toward your goals beyond high school?; POSTERS should not exceed 11x17 and should be completed on paper or poster board—not canvas; ESSAYS should not exceed 1 page. Typed essays should utilize a professional font, size 12 point or larger, with single- or double-spacing. If handwritten, essays should be clearly legible. Neatness counts! All essays must provide a clear description/discussion related to the designated theme. Please include name and grade at the top of essay page; Must have a completed, official cover sheet (page 2 of this application) securely attached; and school counselor must be an ALSCA member at the time of the state-level submission

Structural Engineers Association of Alabama’s Scholarship

  • Scholarships available for students who are both residents of Alabama and fall into one of the following categories: Junior and Senior students of an accredited program; College students entering an accredited Graduate or Doctoral Program; Post-graduate students continuing in an accredited Graduate or Doctoral Program; Persons employed in the field of structural engineering and licensed as an Engineer-In-Training (EIT) OR Professional Engineer (PE) entering an accredited Graduate or Doctoral Program

Camp McDowell Update

Join us on Friday, February 19 for ANOTHER teacher workshop day at The Farm and the Environmental Center.

We will spend time with the animals and learn more about what the Farm is doing.

We will explore streams, canyons and take time enjoying the woods.

Throughout all these activities we will focus on Social and Emotional activities you can do with your students (or adult learners).

Price: $30.00 for 6 hours of programming, lunch and connecting with educators all over the state.
