Christmas Caution
Christmas is a stressful time for students living in dysfunctional families. School is often the only part of their lives that offers the steady, caring, predictable environment that they crave. The thought of spending two weeks in a difficult home environment causes stress during a season when everyone else is celebrating. Look for kids feeling that stress by noticing unexpected or exaggerated outbursts or atypical behavior, from aggression to lethargy. The counselors are geared up next week to spend some extra time with these students.
Magnet School Field Trip
How do you measure the success of a field trip? One way would have to be the content the kids absorb while away from campus. While the Magnet School presentations were challenging to hear, every group, from the first to the sixth presentation, strained to listen and focus. And the kids highly interested in particular magnet campuses hurried to get seating up front.
A second measure must be participation. We had over 400 kids attend, which means less than 10% stayed back. Credit goes to the eighth-grade teachers for pushing the kids to get their permission slips turned in and get invested in their futures.
A final measure is far more basic - moving a big group efficiently. Perhaps the ultimate success story is the headcount. We left with 426 kids, and returned with the same 426 kids!
Thanks, everyone for wrangling, corralling, and counting heads.
- To Patti Vlieger, thank you for your visibility and positive engagement with students, even while holding them accountable.
- To Ms. Williams, you are so vital to this campus and yet, so few see all the work that you do. Thank you!
- To Ms. Hart, you are so multi-talented, so efficient, and so good for our kiddos. I appreciate you.
- To the P3 Day participants, you're helping to change a school cultural through positive approaches to behavior management. Smiles, movement and positivity supports students' learning!
