Community Soar Report
To SOAR with eagles all you need is to BELIEVE you can fly
Proud To Be An Eagle
Greetings Eagle Families,
Words cannot begin to describe how excited and honored I am to be serving you as Principal of Oakdale Middle School. I have had the opportunity to work with Mrs. Badshah over the past several weeks and I have heard so many incredible things about OMS, our students, and our entire school community. I am eager to work alongside each of you as we help every student excel both academically and socially.
Oakdale Middle School has a longstanding tradition of academic excellence and together we will ensure that these standards and expectations not only continue, but thrive. Through our collaborative efforts, OMS students will be given the opportunity to develop character and citizenship, foster a passion for learning, and explore all the opportunities that will be made available to them through a well-rounded education. Together, we will ensure that every Oakdale Middle School student soars and receives the best education possible.
I hope you make many lasting memories in these final weeks of summer!
Daniel L. Enck
The Community SOAR Report - The Community SOAR Report will be sent out every month and serve as the "one stop shop" for OMS school news. Please let me know if you ever have a question about anything on the Community SOAR Report or if there is something that you would like to see added to the newsletter.
Middle School Schedule Video - There are many questions about the details for the upcoming school year including the daily schedule for students. Earlier this week, FCPS sent out a systemic Find Out First which provided parents with an opportunity to review the virtual middle school schedule. I will be creating a short video providing an overview of the daily schedule. The video will be sent to the OMS community on Monday, August 17th via Find Out First. Additionally, I will host two virtual town hall meetings for parents to ask any additional questions about the virtual middle school schedule. The first town hall will be on Thursday, August 20th at 6:00PM via Google Meet. The second town hall meeting be will held on Friday, August 21st at 9:00AM via Google Meet. Additional information and links for the town halls will be sent with Monday's "Middle School Schedule Video" Find Out First.
Student Schedules - OMS will be mailing student schedules home on Thursday, August 20th. Additionally, students will be able to access their schedules via Schoology on Monday, August 24th.
OMS Virtual Orientation - OMS staff is currently creating an orientation video for students and parents that will provide important information and resources for the upcoming school year. The presentation will include information on: Schoology, attendance expectations/guidelines, grading policies, interventions and supports for students, an overview of social emotional learning (SEL) advisory lessons, as well as best practices and routines for virtual learning success. The video will be sent to the community via Find Out First during the week of August 24th.
Distribution of Technology Devices, Textbooks, Workbooks, etc. - OMS staff is coordinating with the FCPS Technology Department to set up distribution days for students to receive a Chromebook (if they do not currently have one) and other items that will be necessary for virtual learning (i.e. math textbook, Spanish textbook, class workbooks, etc.). These items will be distributed to OMS students during the week of August 24th. If your child needs a device, parents/guardians can either send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org or email@example.com or check "yes" to the technology question on the Student Planning Profile which was sent earlier this week. Specific details for the distribution of these materials will be sent next week via Find Out First.
Back to School Night - OMS is planning to host a virtual Back to School Night on Wednesday, September 9th. The event will provide parents/guardians with an opportunity to virtually visit with their students teachers and learn more about each class. Additional details for the event including a specific schedule will be sent in the coming weeks.

Message from the OMS PTSA:
The OMS PTSA warmly welcomes all our families for the upcoming school year, particularly our incoming 6th graders. As we start the year in an all virtual learning model, the PTSA wants to identify ways we can best support our school community. Please email us at firstname.lastname@example.org with your ideas and suggestions.
Our priorities for the upcoming school are:
1) Support the students, parents and teachers as we respond to challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic;
2) Increase our efforts to prioritize inclusion, diversity and cultural issues;
3) Increase our PTSA membership to continue to solidify our strength as an organization.
Some actions we are taking to address these priorities include:
1) Strengthening our website to provide a one-stop resource for families;
2) Increasing our social media presence to provide fun ways for students and families to feel connected to the school;
3) More diversity programming.
Our experience in the spring in middle school with 7 periods and 7 teachers, was email, email, email. Knowing these challenges, we will keep our communications as brief as possible and we'll #recap our communications so if you've only got a minute, read the #recap.
#Recap: Email us ideas on how we can support kids, parents and teachers in all virtual learning environment. Stay tuned for website updates and increased social media presence. Join the PTSA.
